♚ why in the night sky are the lights hung? why is the earth moving round the sun? floating in the vacuum with no purpose, not a one there's a trail of footprints in the snow. they shift from beast to man to boy and little creatures in between. perhaps to a follower, they seem like a sort of parade. follow-the-leader, or a boy walking his bear, dog, mouse, and fox. it feels quite like a parade to pine too, because he the animals don't feel the same. he feels separate from them, as if his body remains as his soul and mind transfers to the fox. it feels like body-swapping to pine-- and if he knew the word, he'd definitely consider it so. he's not hungry, he's already eaten. he's coming right back from dinner, actually, and his hunger has come and gone-- he's stuffed. a small family's scraps is enough for him. (he usually takes form of a raccoon when he eats, that way it's easier for people to understand why something is digging through their trash can if they should see him. he used to do it in human form, but...people didn't seem to appreciate that.) there's a pot of water in his cave, and when he arrives he allows it to steep for a moment before pouring a cup. he found the pot in a trash can months ago. the spout is partially chipped, but after a wash it worked just fine. the tea, he had to work harder to get. he had to go to market-- but he's made sure to stock up every time so the visits aren't frequent. pine straightens one of the many dolls lining the upper rocks of his cave, running his fingers through its yarn hair. people always throw away such nice things. it's a shame, really. you can fix anything with a dose of care, devotion, and loveisn't it true, SOPHIA ROSENBURG?LAIKA OF GAGNAM STYLE |

[attr="class","tnsns"]world of white food is difficult to find in the winter, but the world always finds a way to balance itself out somehow. there are less travellers on the road, but less men come to investigate whenever they go missing. sophia has perfectly practical reasons for favoring the winter season. her less practical reason is that slitting their throats feels more like a mercy killing when they tread through the snowstorms in their too-fragile bodies. (she's not sentimental. there's nothing sentimental about the sharpness of her teeth or the unbreakable grip of her bone-white fist.) some days, sophia thinks that clawing hunger is the only thing keeping her alive. it's been decades since she had anything else to live for. twenty years since she became alone, twenty years since the consequences of her decisions burdened any draugr but herself. if she kneeled over today, nobody is around to mourn. sophia can feel content about that. company is strange. company is an inconsistency in her existence. sophia makes small sacrifices in order to avoid being caught in the bustle of human encroachment. she doesn't use the cavern opening, since she's approaching from the opposite direction. she doesn't see the point of walking around the cavern. her body materializes from the back wall. sophia doesn't bother with formalities either. they weren't monsters who needed it. ♚ why in the night sky are the lights hung? why is the earth moving round the sun? floating in the vacuum with no purpose, not a one pine sips and rubs his eyes, growing drowsier as the night moves on-- dinner and tea certainly do not help to keep him awake. he finally solidifies on his usual appearance and glances at sophia cautiously. it takes him a moment, but eventually he comes to the conclusion that there is no use in trying to coerce her out or ignore her. it's as much her cave as it is his, although he doesn't like to admit it. "something is terrorizing thebes." he quotes exactly in struggled speech, from a merchant traveling amongst many-- all fleeing from the city. it takes him a few seconds to sort out his words, but he manages a sloppy, "shul is flooding," and then shrugs. he has seen neither with his own two eyes, but he has faith in people. pine pours sophia a cup and slowly pushes it across the slab of stone acting as a counter, careful not to spill. [attr="class","tnsns"]world of white she hasn't tired of being blown about the wastelands like a leaf in the wind. not yet. sophia doesn't pick anything out in particular from pine's words. there is no more truth to be extracted no matter how closely she listens. he means to say, it is business as usual on their continent. she supposes that the substitution is preferable to an outright lie. sophia takes the cup and stares into its murky surface before taking a sip, if only for something to do with her hands. "i don't suppose that you've gone much farther north than the centerspine mountains?" she likes to frame specific questions that lead to specific answers, but she doesn't think that she's making too far of an assumption. she's seen the human goods that litter his cave. one can only wonder what the impractical things brought to his abode. 'the northern wastes,' as the humans say, have nothing to offer pine. besides risk of death. "have you?" he blinks. he'd almost forgotten-- she is in his cave, not the other way around. pine does not mind visitors; sophia is welcome...but he does have a right to know who she is? and why she's here? but why should i care? he thinks, inspecting her with his eyes. what if... he draws a smooth and cold stone from a pocket in his tattered pants and approaches sophia in a friendly manner. "will you do me a favor?" he has to crane a bit to see her at his wimpy height, attempting to catch her eye to eye. he holds out the rock. (what does it matter when you have no mother no father and no siblings?) her grip tightens around her cup. "not in a long time." at some point, she headed down the centerspine to recover her strength. at another point, she found it more and more difficult to return. she considers the stone carefully. it doesn't appear to be any runestone that she recognizes. sophia looks back to his face. (probably.) but to be honest, pine is only asking her to hold a rock. he shakes his hand gently. a poor attempt to rush it along. she's quite tall, but pine is not intimidated. it's his cave....although, who knows how long she's been here.
