the market is packed and teeming, but no more than it would be on a weekday. the sun is high and hot; ava finds shade under her hood and stall roofs. someone is selling fruits and vegetables, and she grabs a shiny red apple while a customer avidly complains to the vendor about prices.
it's a small victory and she takes a bite out of satisfaction, stops when she feels the sensation of the hairs rising on her neck. she turns, to find the source, if at all possible in the crowd.

she's hugging a basket, it is woven strong and rough against her bare arms as she shoulders her way through the crowd. it isn't usual of itha to be a patron, what use has a beast for anything that can be bought, she's more driven by mirroring the crowd than accumulating anything.
glancing up, itha watches a girl pluck an apple from behind the vendor's back, and her interest isn't in the thief, but the monster. out of a compulsion she doesn't quite understand, itha rushes towards her and doesn't think she may be misunderstood. "excuse me,"

the market is full, and for a moment ava thinks one of the masses is speaking to someone else. but the apple in her hand makes her turn compulsively, and the woman behind her doesn't look like she's about to alert somebody. still, ava is not about to be caught.
"you have the wrong person." she says fiercely, twirling the apple in her hand. it glances off her finger and she catches it with the other. she's on edge now; she wants to turn tail and run.

her arms are full, she shakes hair from her face to meet the other woman's eyes. dark, glinting - birdlike but wide. (this may be the face she made when you sent the boy for her. this may be the face you made when you knew he would tear out your insides. this may be the feral look of a wild animal trapped in human skin.)
"no," itha is uneasy, as she should be, but not afraid. not malicious. "i wanted to... apologize." she wants to reach out, but she only steps closer

she doesn't understand the uneasy look on her face, somethig like guilt, but she can't fathom why. ava doesn't know this woman, hasn't seen her once as a monster or otherwise. still, she seems to know her, and that itself makes her uneasy. this reeked of fate and something intangible, the realization having her reject the possibility completely. in a daze she takes a step back, not quite glaring anymore. disgusted, maybe. the product of a sick joke.
"what for?" she shrugs. "i've never met you."

somehow, itha is starting to doubt herself. of course, the woman has never seen itha before, has never heard her name or known her trade. that is in the past, but the past has a way of rushing up hot to the back of your throat until it comes out.
she swallows - her hair is sticking to her face but her hands aren't freed to push it back, and itha can only give a shake of her head. "well, no... i..." this seems important to do, as if she's asking sympathy, understanding, forgiveness - now, of all times?
"your champion." she blurts, hoping at the very least it'll catch her attention, keep her in place.

ava is about to simply leave - the last thing she wants a stranger in the market mistaking her for someone else. well, what? shes shifting from foot to foot and she's going to run—
but that word, that one word makes her stop and stare and steals away the breath in her lungs. she's scared, fright dripping icy through her body. in that moment she might have outran a centaur, but she stands stock still.
sense comes back, and upon recovering she nods at the woman to follow. she aims for an alley a short ways away, scaring off a few dirty children at the other end. ava turns her eyes to the woman then, hissing, "what do you know about my champion?"

she looks restless and uneasy, not the way itha remembers seeing her. it's strange that she does, remembers her so clearly and undoubtedly. it's strange, the resolve that has gripped her.
for a moment, the bird looks ready to run, and itha shifts the basket's weight in her hold, as if she'd able to reach out and stop her with one hand. instead, she beckons her into an alleyway, where itha bends down and puts the basket down to lift her hands and show her vulnerable palms.
the short walk is enough to find her bearings, to find enough resolve (but not enough time to figure out why she's doing this). "a lot." she doesn't mean it to sound so dismissive. "i was the one who told him." itha nods in her direction.

she can't find words and crosses her arms instead. her thumbnail pinches into her palm, sharp pain shooting down her arm for a moment.
a salt witch. that's that conclusion that ava comes to, looking this woman up and down. she doesn't look like a threat, but real dangers usually don't.
"he almost killed me." she says, feeling her eyes grow wide and prickly. she blinks, willing back tears, regaining her posture. "why are you telling me this now?"

her words aren't the sting itha expects. maybe they should be, but itha just wipes her hands on her dusty cloak and averts her gaze for a few seconds.
"i don't know." she admits. "things are different now." again, she's being vague, and itha pushes her glasses up on her nose and tries to be clear, as much as she can be in her muddled intent. she wants to say they are on the same side now, but they aren't. neither are they opposition. (it's a nonsensical binary, she's come to realize) "you could kill him first."

"what good would that do?" she hisses. "he'll just kill me again." in the next life, and the one after that—and it never stops, and ava wants to squeeze this girl's neck in her hands. but that wouldn't do any good, now would it? this was going to happen sooner or later. maybe a part of her wants to feel pity - pity is a human emotion, but pity for a monster isn't. but that isn't what she feels. "then why didn't you let him?" she snaps. the short and bloody lives don't sit like tumours in the long and healthy ones. she looks at the apple, clutched white-knuckled in the woman's palm.
"sorry." itha sighs, as if the apology is being forced from her. "i don't know what i expected." she runs a hand through her hair - tangled, catching, tugging. "i'm not a witch."
