She wakes up to an artificial sort of darkness and a rough texture against her eyelids. Sophia tries not to feel too relieved that she woke up at all. People didn't keep monsters alive out of the goodness of their heart. Most had better sense than that. Pain throbs along the wounds that her assailant had dug into her skin. The chains feel heavy around her arms, but she makes no effort to break them. She could, if she tried. But even if she slaughtered everyone in the room, she knows that there would still be more soldiers than she can handle inside of this compound (She knows that it's a compound because she can't hear the wind. That unsettles her more than anything else). For now, it seemed advantageous to appear bound. She doesn't scream like the damsel that she isn't. She doesn't lose her wits like the fool that she isn't. That would help no one, least of all her. Sophia listens for the tell-tale heart. She is not disappointed. There is no need to play innocent; she can still taste the blood on her teeth when she opens her mouth to ask: "What do you want from me?" Maybe they don't know. Not yet. and kisses are a better fate than wisdom. | The sound of a door opening, wood scraping against a stone floor. Footsteps tread back and forth across the room. Clink of a ceramic tray being put on a table. The smell of coffee and hot bread. Thalia stands in front of her prisoner for a moment. No, not her prisoner: the empire's prisoner. Still, it is hard not to feel a certain attachment, a certain sympathy. She is still very young, despite the sword she is designated to carry, despite the mouth of the emperor that commands her to kill and to serve and not to question. It is natural to feel these sleight of hand emotions. She leans over and her hands meet behind the other woman's head. She unknots the blindfold and lets it fall to the ground. Without answering her question, she turns on her heel and goes back to the table. She lifts up the tray and walks back, kneeling in front of Sophia. "I thought you must be hungry," she says. "You seemed very hungry the last time you were awake," she adds with a rueful gleam in her eyes. The tray has a cup of coffee, a cup of water. Half a loaf of bread, still steaming from the oven. Slices of roast beef with brown mustard and horseradish. Roasted potatoes, sweet beans with onions, cabbage and butter peas. "I wasn't sure what you'd like, so I brought some of everything," Thalia says. She balances the tray on one hand and reaches to unlock the woman's chains with the other. "The guards are holding the man you were fighting with in another room." Information and a gentle warning. "But we can talk about everything after you eat. My name is Thalia. There's no chairs in here, I'm sorry."She puts the tray down in front of her and stands back. SOPHIA ROSENBURG |

she's sorry that she hadn't slit the soldier's throat before feeding, but that's about the extent of her regret. somehow, sophia doesn't think that 'sorry for not slitting your throat' would suffice for most humans as an apology. even if it's the truth, strangely enough. so it goes unsaid. the soldier has the right to protect herself according to every law of nature. why doesn't she? why does she allow sophia to see light? no, she knows the answer to that. sophia knows when she's being taunted. but a hungry monster will roll over and play dead for awhile if it means access to meat, even if it's been roasted until it's deader than dead. until she leaves the city, she won't know where her next meal is coming from. it's one of the strangest paradoxes of a city: the security, despite the congregation of so many humans. it isn't something that she would ever expect in the north. she takes the beef and ignores all else that the soldier had brought. sophia's canines cut through the meat quickly like melted butter. it's not enough when compared to her usual habit of decimating entire corpses, but it's enough to keep her in a right mind. all the same, she probably makes anyone from old town seem well-mannered at the table. sophia has no real storytelling abilities to speak of. so she tells the truth instead. there's nothing that she has to protect, no real secret of value. "the patrols pursued me into the direction of the city." her words are accented, but nothing that would identify her origin to a single human settlement. "the man isn't anyone to me." she pauses. "his smell was important." it was always the smell, even in a place as dirty as old town. "i can't seperate the smell from the bones."she's not sure if her words mean much at all. sophia has not talked to anyone in a very long time. there's a question hanging in the air. a question that she can't quite place. "i don't know." she's still thinking about the guards. in the plural. she wonders if she will get very far if she incapacitates them all. and kisses are a better fate than wisdom. | Thalia looks disappointed in th way only a child can look disappointed. It is an expression at odds with the crisp edges of her new uniform, the sword at her side. "Or we can talk now," Thalia says and reaches for the cup of coffee the woman hadn't taken. She takes a sip and wrinkles her nose. She always forgets how bitter it is. "What did he smell like?"SOPHIA ROSENBURG |

her disappointment means nothing to sophia. "he smelled like you and the one who had stabbed me." she's not sure if all city humans were so particular about the details, or just this one. sophia's gaze flickers back to thalia. when she wanders the fog, does she ascertain the hair color or the shape of the eyes, or does she follow the sole outline that she can see? "maybe not so much like me." she doesn't talk with the intention of imparting information. that's not what solitude does to her. she already has all the answers that she needs. she's not sure why the soldier is dawdling like this. she feels some of the strength returning to her joints. maybe she would be leaving tonight. "you can't possibly care about all of these things." or maybe the children did, picking at a monster the way they would at insects in a ditch. the sun starts to come up in a small barred window. sophia takes a quick glance and decides that the wall beside her is facing the northeast. she could lose the guards in the crowd as soon as the streets begin to fill. the wall doesn't seem like such a big obstacle in comparison. and kisses are a better fate than wisdom. | "I do care," Thalia says. "But more than my own interest, I need to know for my report. All public disturbances require civil judgment."
She follows Sophia's glance to the window. "I'm sure you noticed your chains were made of iron," she says. "My colleague said you were a faerie. I don't really care what you are. Maybe you're a faerie. My education didn't cover such things. But the guards in the other room, and every soldier stationed in this complex knows to use iron if they see you outside my custody, instead of Noric steel."
She took another sip of lukewarm coffee and again made the same slightly disgruntled face. "I believe we can resolve this without any more bloodshed."SOPHIA ROSENBURG |

sophia doesn't take her too seriously. a sword may cut, but it doesn't always kill. she's not sure why her power did not work on this girl, but she expects that the other guards are not so blessed. not that she would have to bypass a guard at all. she has no need for this woman. sophia has no need of anyone who does not scare easily. "i see that your companion had taught you nothing." the chains had been the only thing keeping her in this place, not the ancient walls that may as well have been water to her. "goodbye."she turns around and walks through the wall. a guard in the next room yells. sophia does the neighborhood a favor by scrambling his brain before he can wake anyone else. she slams the room's other uniformed occupant against the wall, but not hard enough to knock him out. "the way out of the city. where is it?"the boy already looks as if he wishes he had chosen a different occupation. well, he can't. not until sophia knows how to get out of this city. and kisses are a better fate than wisdom. | Thalia watches the woman turn and go without a word. In one fluid motion she throws her cup of coffee across the room and it shatters against the wooden door. Then she kicks a hole in the wall and steps through, her right arm raised to knock low-hanging brick out of the way. Well. The scene in the next room over isn't as bad as she imagined. Thalia draws the iron knife from her belt and throws it at Sophia's back. SOPHIA ROSENBURG |

she wasn't meant to be caged. she is meant to be dead or free (are those fates so different from each other?) the knife hurts, but she's braved enough winters to know that pain is not the priority. sophia pulls out the knife with a sickening squelch. it's throwing sized, of all things. it's only proof that her fear of soldiers is a childhood trauma and not present reality. sophia throws the knife back in thalia's direction at a speed that would shatter it, should it make contact with a brick. she turns around to find that her hostage had already stood up and drawn his weapon. except he's not a mercenary - he's an underpaid guard. sophia avoids the slow blade and breaks his arm with a crack. this can't go on, not if there are more humans in the compound. she needs a place to feed properly, not more armed guards to fight. she doesn't know where she's going, but she knows that she does not want to be here. sophia runs through another wall before tasting free air-- just not for long. the air crackles and flames erupt from the ground. a ring of fire. that isn't anything that she can phase through. it's the signature of the mercenary witch that she thought she had lost near kur. she isn't disappointed. "found you." the man pockets his scrying rune. "thanks for saving me the break-in"THALIA DE LUCA | DO YOU THINK WE'LL BE IN LOVE FOREVER?DO YOU THINK WE'LL BE IN LOVE?

and kisses are a better fate than wisdom. | Her gambit has failed. There's nothing left to do but pick up the pieces. Thalia steps over the shards of her broken knife and calls for a healer. One man lies comatose on the floor, his face pale and drawn. A victim of the woman's strange power? The man she had been fighting with had been the same; felled without a blow. Thalia briefly wonders why she hasn't turned that trick on Thalia herself before kneeling beside the boy with the broken arm. He is a boy, after all, to Thalia's eyes, although he's a year or two older than her in truth. She looks at him and sees someone impossibly young. She has never considered herself young. To be young, you still have to have something to lose. "The healer will be here in a moment," she tells him. He whimpers softly in response. Sweat beads on his forehead. She stares at her own hands helplessly. They are white and unblemished. She doesn't even have calluses from sword-work anymore. A useless strength. Her remaining soldiers file into the room, setting up a barrier. The witch moves beside Thalia. Magic rolls off her hands in pulsing blue waves. A useful strength. "The woman is just outside," he says, unprompted. It takes Thalia a moment to realize what he's talking about. She half jerks to her feet in a stilted motion. He keeps talking. "Another witch caught her. Not one of ours."
She picks up the iron sword the other soldier dropped. The balance is slightly off, but it will serve. It must. When she steps outside, she isn't sure what she expects to see, despite the man's words. The sight both surprises her and doesn't: the feelings flutter into a single thumping baseline in her chest. The steady weight of the blade. The leather of the pommel chafing her palm. "This woman is an Imperial prisoner in my custody," she says. "I will take over here."SOPHIA ROSENBURG |

sophia watches the man with unbridled hatred, but anger does not cut the way that sharp canines do. it wasn't for a lack of trying. a full company of men had died back at kur for her 'trying'. they were experienced enough to bring iron blades, but that hadn't saved them from her teeth and nails. "i wouldn't try any of your mind powers, if i were you." the witch tuts. "my power is the only thing keeping the flames from completely immolating you." the circle of flame tightens slowly around sophia's body, if only to emphasize that fact. she watches the man walk over to the soldier's side, seething at the fact that his stride was nowhere near as confident when she had been cutting down his colleagues. he takes the girl's left hand and drops a bag of coins into it. whatever the soldier was making a month, the bag probably exceeded it. "that should be enough for you to turn away for a few minutes, don't you think?" even from here, sophia can see the shine of his teeth. the soldier is instantly out of her mind. when coins pass hands, sophia knows that even the rarest bit of concern would vanish instantly. a second man turns the corner of the prison. the scar that sophia had left across his chest is still only about half-healed. he didn't look happy. it had just occured to sophia that transporting her would draw a lot of attention when she notices the iron axe in his hand. "you probably don't want to see this part." the witch turns to face his prisoner. by now, sophia has almost no color left in her face. fire licks very nearly against her heels and she is no longer thinking straight. and kisses are a better fate than wisdom. | Thalia's fists clenches around the bag of coins, weighing it. Her on the hilt shakes for a moment before she grips even tighter, white-knuckled. The witch turns away from her, back to the woman. Thalia raises her sword to the back of his neck. "what a joke, you guards can't even keep her in custody." he sneers, but the circle around sophia loosens a little without disappearing completely. "you won't have time to regret it once she tears through a company of about fifteen men. like she did last week. what will your precious application of justice matter then?"sophia can't believe it. three times. three times, the woman had let her live. she doesn't know why, and that frightens her. but the heat around her body is dissipating a little, and that's more real than any of her own fears. the fire gives out to fear. the man with the axe attempts to flee. it seems that his courage had only been substantiated with fire. sophia doesn't move the way that a woman who had been threatened with decapitation ought to move -- every step is calculated with purpose. she cracks his shoulder bones with one hand, grips him with the other, and smashes his head against the jail wall. "sixteen." the body slumps. sophia doesn't care to check whether or not he is dead from the impact. there is still the other mercenary to attend to. there was a certain way that sophia had imagined the scene playing out in her head after being threatened by blade and flame. every fibre of her body demanded it, hungered for her own justice in a world that will not give her any. tear him to shreds before you meet your end at the point of a blade. that is the only law that she had understood for nearly half a century. the human's neck can be crushed within her grip. she could punch a hole in his stomach. she could pull out his jaw from his skull. humans die so easily. none of those things happen. the story had been rewritten so many times that sophia scarcely recognizes it anymore. she did not die at old town. she was not cut open in prison for the sake of scientific research. she was not traded for a handful of coin. sophia grips the witch's head with both hands, her face utterly indifferent at his terror. she leans closer to his ear and whispers: "seventeen." she blasts his mind with her psychic power. sophia releases her hands and watches him fall to the floor. she looks back up slowly at the soldier. the girl-child would not have 'gut him like a lizard'. sophia was surer of it than anything. "if i see them ever again, then i will clean the flesh from their bones." sophia turns around to leave. no wall can keep her.
