It is quiet. The wind howls, and a beast roars somewhere in the distance. These are the sounds that dominate his home, and though most would claim that Centerspine is a place entirely inhospitable to life, Caelin is perfectly satisfied. Perhaps this was the reason why he felt no desire to leave, because it was the only place that he could call his own.
But today is different, only because something else has taken a hold of the naga's attention span. It was difficult to sleep in the cranium that he wore while disguised as a human, and though he preferred not to, he was forced to remove it while he rested. Unfortunately, a variety of curious resident monsters had become notorious for carrying the skull off to their own devices. Three times already, he'd had to track them down and reclaim the item.
Again, it has gone missing. He grows weary of this game and would never be able to forgive himself if the skull went missing for sure. And if Caelin's observations are correct, there is someone or something approaching, but it is difficult to tell whether or not the presence is hostile.
He steels himself for the worst.

Trees and rocks and dirt are everywhere here. He is used to seeing them all at a distance, faraway and out of reach. Fintan knows only cobbled streets and steel cages, and rare glimpses of sky. Now, with all this nature surrounding him, he is lost but in awe. Cries of beast, birds and the howling wind lure him further and further in. His feet fall light on the on the mountain brush, barely making a sound. Hallow bones make him light and quick where they should allow him flight, which suites him well in its stead. Alerting any predatory beast in these unfamiliar parts was far from anything desirable, as his bone also made him weak and easily injured. And he realizes that had kept him from setting out into the wilderness before. But he is here now and curious to see what lay deeper in. On he creeps until he catches a glimpse of blue hair and pale skin. Some unnamed instinct tells him it isn't a human, but one like him in their guise. And he was unsure if his presence would be welcomed so he waits until he is sure he is noticed. There is no turning back then. "Hi," he nearly squeaks and steps into sight. CAELIN |

He isn't human; Caelin is certain of that much. He narrows blue eyes at the newcomer, not quite sure if the stranger had spoken or simply made a noise. Noises were easy, speech, a little more difficult. And if this stranger knew such language, perhaps he was a foreigner to the wastelands and had grown up elsewhere.
Where that elsewhere was remained wholly unknown for the naga. After all, he had spent his entire sixty years of life holed away in Centerspine.
In any case, it doesn't appear that the boy (creature?) has what he was searching for. It would be impolite to not even acknowledge him, so Caelin offers the other a small nod. It is his own gesture of hello. But before he can turn tail and leave to continue searching for his mother's skull, perhaps there is a way to ask the other if he has come across the lost item.
There are plenty of bones scattered around the area. Caelin lifts one up, a skull, and points at it, sets it down, and holds his hands apart in his skull's approximate length.

He’s lived among humans long enough that their tongue comes naturally to him. It’s the language he defaults to. Now he realizes it isn’t a language all monsters understand. To the one before him, it must be senseless noises, and he doesn’t know any other way to communicate. A rift is forming between them, one which makes them seem further apart than they are. But he is offered a nod, a gesture as close to a hello as he could have hoped for. And it doesn’t end there. The creature before him makes other gestures. It takes him a moment before he puts together what they mean. “You’re looking for something,” he mutters until he realizes the other monster wouldn’t understand him. “A skull, around that size.” This time he mutters to himself rather than for the other’s ears. And he shakes his head when he thinks he’s understood. CAELIN |

Oh. Well, that was unfortunate. After all these years, Caelin has managed to gather that a shake of the head was a standard gesture of disagreement, of a simple "no". The corners of his mouth deepen into a slight frown. If this newcomer hadn't seen it, then where could it have gone?
The naga crouches on the ground, as though this position would allow him a better vantage point to search for his missing item. But then he casts a glance over his shoulder, narrowing his eyes at Fintan, as though he were questioning the phoenix's claims of not seeing his precious skull.
Certainly, he wouldn't be lying about that, would he?
... of course not. Perhaps this creature had stumbled upon him in search of something different. And if not, perhaps he could help. Unfortunately, the most that Caelin is capable of is a slight tilt of the head directed at the phoenix.

Desperation marks the features of the naga before him. He was looking for something, a skull. Fintan doesn't know the significance of it himself, but he is frantic and still searching. The phoenix can understand the feeling. "It's this big?" He holds his hands out to mirror the length indicated previously. "A skull?" He points to the bones littered on the ground. Then he points to himself and nods. "I'll help."He searches the ground, unsure of what he's looking for. Only that it is a large skull, and it was important to the other monster. Under bushes and behind trees he looks, around large rocks and further into the woods. It had to somewhere, and he would help find it. CAELIN |
