when his grandparents called kieran a blemish on the family line, they really weren't telling a lie. even if it was a little hurtful.

really, it was his mother who was the noblewoman. his father was nothing special, at least in the sense of class, but his mother insisted she loved him and that was that. if the family wanted any heirs, they'd have to let the headstrong young woman do as she wished.

unfortunately, that union resulted in kieran. he was a good child but grew into a lazy man, prone to vices. alcohol, smoking, illegal substances, casual 'relationships' were all up his alley. no amount of being friendly or witty could reverse the negative aspects of himself.

really, kieran was living the high life. he didn't have to work for his money, he got almost anything he wanted and he literally was high for a good portion of it.

the only negative was the nightmares that sometimes plagued him. he'd heard of others being plagued by strange nightmares that came out of nowhere, but his simply involved feeling the worst emotional pain he could imagine. there was no specific imagery he could remember, but he always woke up with his heart aching.

but it was probably nothing to worry about, right?



to put it pretty bluntly, kieran has no fighting skills whatsoever. on his mother's side, there are witches, and his father's side are just humans. they were ordinary people living an ordinary life in shara, as ordinary as nobility can be, after all.

he became a champion by accident in a past life, and he's no more well-prepared for the second coming of his monster now than he was back then.

in his past life, kieran was a fisherman. it's a far cry from what he is now, but he lived his life by the sea instead of the spiraling streets of shara. his life was simple until he found a woman on the beach one morning, and when he found the seal skin next to her he put together she was a selkie.

but call it love at first sight or call it lust - more than likely the latter - he kept the seal skin from her, not allowing the selkie to return to the sea. even so, the two fell in love by some grace of the goddess and were married. the had two children in the span of seven years, and that's when his wife started obsessing over the ocean.

he kept the seal skin locked up, and brought the key with him every day when he went out to tend his nets. it wasn't until he found his wife missing one day that he realized he'd forgotten to bring the key with that morning. he was heartbroken and angry and now the single father of two children.

it wasn't until a few weeks later when he was bringing in his nets one morning when one was heavier than normal. lugging it to shore he saw a seal caught in the netting, drowned from being unable to get air at the surface of the water. but when he pulled his nets ashore he realized it was no seal when the animal's skin fell away, leaving a painfully familiar woman behind.
