I die every single time the mood on the ride back to irkalla is much more different than when she had left. even her guard had known better than to ask her how things had went. the carriage driver had been less perceptive and recieved a rather stiff acknowledgement in return. by next month, the same peaceful roads may be overrun by imperial soldiers who would jail her in an instant. the cart halts to a stop in the middle of a trip. sophia checks her watch. they were due for a break once every two hours. it has been a little over one. why are they stopping? feeling something amiss, she opens the carriage door. ETTALAIKA OF GS! |

she could smell the flesh a mile away and it didn't take her long to find the source. she's picky, but as she counts the heads she supposes it might be worth it. she's a little cautious of the cart, she doesn't know what's in it and she knows surprises are the last thing she needs when she's aware of her weaknesses.
her attack is quick, one by one the humans fall and when she takes off the gloves of hide the talons leaking into her human form she digs into their chest. but not for long, the carriage opens and she just waits and watches.
every monster has fight or flight instincts, her flight ones are particularly strong.

I die every single time her eyes glow a faint electric blue. "etta." the name is on her tongue, and sophia realizes her mistake. blood drums in her ears, the girl from the northern wastes coming back to reclaim her crown. the heir of house rosenburg holds her ground. (no crown of thorns, no blade of mercy) blood paints the skies. the monster roars, for whom do you perform? for whom? there is no audience in the wings, not until the families mourn. the layers of gold around her neck shine, and she is suddenly aware of what an easy target she is, weighed down by all of the things that she had once disdained humans for. despite herself, she steps off the carriage and removes her silken glove, covering the eyes of the fallen guard with it. she had not taken the senior guard of house rosenburg, for she knows that his priorities would not be so easily swayed. not for the first time, she learns the price of selfishness. "you know that you cannot fight me, etta." try as she might, her talons will never pierce her. ETTALAIKA OF GS! |

etta's blood freezes as her name slides off the other's tongue. she stands from her crouching position. perhaps, she thinks for a moment, this was the wrong move, but she cannot leave a witness no matter what. she bears her talons and stands her ground, but she isn't the one to make the first move. instead she questions the woman, "how do you know me?"
she likes to think she's not infamous, that she separates herself from her crimes. she's never met this woman before, and it leaves questions.

I die every single time she knows about the weakness of monsters. they hide behind their own secrecy, thinking that their deeds would go unaccounted like drops in an ocean. with luck, sophia can still backtrack. she didn't think that she would be talking her way out, but it's so hard to go back to snapping necks like licorice twists, not after knowing a family's pride and a girl-child's love. "there's been talk of you. people don't forget the bodies after they're gone." she proceeds cautiously, but calmly. as if she already held more cards in her hands than she really does. "if i don't return to my father, then people will investigate. this road may never be safe for you again." she dips into her power, layering her words with magnetic force. she draws out the weakness and doubt like a snake's poison from the wound. she plays with the situation like a ball of yarn. sophia doesn't have to fight, bloodying another is always a choice. thalia had taught her that. etta keeps herself from displaying anything aside from neutrality. don't be weak, this is what you live for. the thrill of it all. isn't this why you hunt your own kind? don't back down, be strong.
she's not immune to whatever this woman is doing, but she's stronger than it. or so she likes to think, what she likes to believe. she won't bend to just words. she's not inexperienced enough to let fear rule her, but not confident enough to let go of her fear. fear keeps you alive, fear keeps you on edge.
"then perhaps, after you i should stop coming to this road," she states.
her body is itching, the talons on her hands are tingling. her instincts are telling her to transform, take advantage of the surprise, jump on her. but she tells herself to wait, wait for a better moment to take her full-size because right now, this is not the moment she needs.

I die every single time the horses are expensive, good breeds. they don't spook easily. she could pull one from the reins. a lady would have run. that's why they die so much in the stories. they don't realize that the story doesn't end with running. there must be a conclusion. "you killed my servants. don't you think that's a generous enough offer?" sophia doesn't look away. she shelves the attacker, trying to make her feel as if sophia is the one who decides exactly where she is in this world. the trick to containing a dragon is to convince him that the mountaintop cave is his. "you're hesitating because you know that surprise was the only advantage that you had. without that, you have nothing." she pushes more magic into her words, a cool balm against her attacker's mind. there's space left for sophia's own doubts, but that can wait until she is out of danger's way. for a moment, her mind gives in. the surprise you had is gone, there's no way for you to win now. you need to get away, live to see another day and live to heat another beating, warm and bloody heart. but after a point, she pushes the thoughts out of her mind, and realises that this standing, this waiting is not doing her good. she needs to act soon, or she'll lose herself, but the question is, when is soon?
"you haven't run yet, you haven't made a move. are you not hesitating as well? are you afraid," she asks.

I die every single time she laughs airily, as if she is in court and a duke has told a humiliating joke. she pretends to be free, but she waits for sophia's offer, as if they were trading capital. "what do you want, land? a title?" she's determined to catch this monster in her game. there's a part of sophia who is slightly disgusted at her enemy, being coerced by whom she thinks is a human of all things (aren't you merely disgusted at whom you have become?) "why would i run? frightened children run. i do not run." she's tired, but the spell must continue to ebb at her words. "you may run."ETTALAIKA OF GS! |

land? a title? does this girl think she's interested in that? etta thinks for a moment, and comes to the conclusion that if she thought otherwise she wouldn't have brought up those prospects.
but sadly, none of those things interest her. she just wants to eat, and eating requires a human heart, or a siren one. but siren hearts are so rare, so she supposes she'll have to stop the talking and start the hunting. she will not continue to stand, "then i'll run."
etta runs straight towards her, somewhere in between her running, she transforms. body filling out, feathers spouting, wings spreading, talons forming, this is what she lives for. a shrill cry erupts from her mouth and she lunges, talons first.
she thinks it's time to eat.

I die every single time sophia isn't unsympathetic. she can't live the way that she has for decades without understanding what it's like to have nothing to live for but the next meal. it was a foolish attempt, but she had hoped that this wouldn't have to end in blood. her enemy's blood. sophia's reflexes have slowed over the years, but she is confident that she can still overpower her enemy. when there is nothing between her flesh and a set of sharpened talons, there is no choice but to believe. behind her, her not-dead guard gargles a mouthful of blood. that's right. fighting is no longer her primary instinct. already, sophia is withdrawing her stance as if she had something to hide, leading her to be pinned against the carriage door. claws dig into her chest, and it hurts worse than it ever did in the centerspine mountains. she can't breathe properly, and that frightens her more than it should have. she's going to die, she's going to die here-- she does not want to be here. sophia leans in, and her body slips right through the bird-woman's. she lands face-forward into the ground behind her attacker.
