he parted his lips exhaled a stream of smoke, basking in it. iggie's house was full of vaguely creepy art and kieran figured if he smoked enough, maybe he wouldn't be able to see anymore. he never thought of the best ideas when he was high, that was for certain. it might seem a little dysfunctional that most times kieran saw his cousin they toked up, but it was really quite a bonding experience. what else was there to do, anyway? other than go around the streets and pick up women, but he could do that later. having a blissfully open schedule had its perks, sometimes. most times. well, all times. "hey, you can see the future and shit," he asked, looking over at iggie through the haze, "right?" IGGIE VAN ALLAN

they sat in smoke and silence - iggie knew kieran didn't like his house. most people didn't - it was dark and dubious, but iggie had grown comfortable here. and there was no doubt he lived richly, even beneath all the clutter and grime. he takes a slow drag, opens his mouth to let the smoke roll out slowly while he considers the question. augustus tells him that the future is not What Must Be. seeing the future is like trying to read the markings of a writhing snake, trying to hold down its head and find meaning in an ever-shedding skin. (that iggie could have done something, iggie was not a prisoner of fate.) "i guess,"KIERAN DONAGH

it was kind of a rhetorical question, or maybe just to reconfirm what he knew. it was no secret that iggie was a salt witch, something that kieran's mother usually held over him. at least iggie could do something."what's it like?" he asked. "what do you see?" suddenly becoming chatty, he sat up a bit and peered through the smoke, his reddened eyes squinting to see his cousin. they were so different, despite being related. "what's my future?" he was just bullshitting, mostly; kieran knew he didn't have much of a future before himself. IGGIE VAN ALLAN

"uh," he's never had to explain it before. nobody's ever asked him about magic - he's only ever been taught. nothing he's been taught has ever really stuck. scrying has. but that is a natural blessing. he furrows his brow, sits with his mouth gaping for a few moments of thought. iggie starts to cough. when he sits back up with a faint scowl, he's not exactly looking at kieran - he's staring through the smoke and his eyes are shaking like he's watching something pass. "well, it's like... not always seeing. sometimes you can like, feel it. or just know."iggie's gaze seems to come back to the room. he grins. "man, you don't wanna know." he's bluffing, he has no idea. he's not one to dig into others business unless he's asked and rewarded for it. KIERAN DONAGH

he let iggie's words sink in for a moment, two moments...he took another drag and expelled more smoke, adding to the collection they'd already acquired. "sounds like a drag, honestly." but at least iggie had something going for him, which kieran couldn't really say about himself. he was barely nobility, but just enough to slide by without having to really do anything. he didn't have much of a purpose in life. so when iggie said kieran didn't want to know about his future, he laughed, but it was more of a cough than anything. "yeah, there's probably not much there to look at," he said, unaware of the fact that iggie hadn't really looked. but he knew the outcome anyways. he would live, he would die, and that would be the end of it.
