It was his second visit to the Centerspine Mountains, a terrain that proved free of human existence. Surrounded by hidden beasts and trees, the songs of birds as a melodic backdrop, he felt at ease. Although he didn’t shed his human guise in preference of the form he was most comfortable in, that of a bird of white plumage and long intricate tail feathers, he did let part of his true self show in wings stretching wide for flight on his back. Those brilliant, pure snowy feathers soaked up the dazzling sunshine breaking through the trees. He would have been testing them, attempting flight, if he dared to risk injury in the process.
One day he would dare flight, and perhaps even master it, but that wasn’t today. His purpose now was a chance to be true to himself, a day to learn control of his fire. Death would no longer be brought on by an accident, an unintentional burning of assailants—or so he hoped. It wasn’t as easily said than done. But he willed the flickering flames to life in his hands and began practicing.
They swelled and shrank, swirled and took shape. Flames even enveloped him in a crackling, protective ball at his will. He watched them closely, in awe of the possibility. He could be capable of so much! Fire could do so much more than kill.
“This is amazing. I didn’t even know I could do this.” His mirth leaks out in spoken words, laughter rising in his throat. It dies immediately when his ears pick up the sound of a cracking twig. The flames immediately snuff out into nothing by wisps of smoke, and he turns to face whoever was approaching. “Show yourself. Are you friendly, or do you mean harm?”
