They'd convinced him to go outside, those siblings of his. He's always had some sort of inexplainable trust towards them, and they use that to their advantage - and that's good, he supposes, it proves that the while the Zaqar bloodline has given way to a generation of mundanes, they at least still possess the mind that their family is reknowned for. Except while they're smart, they're also gullible, human in the way they expose themselves for the world to see, weaknesses and strengths that would make any potential competitor giddy with delight. Cael smiles at the humans(his people, he supposes he should call them, but do they deserve it?) as he strolls through the streets, waving his hands while the apathy churns inside of him like a slow drug - this, among others, is the reason why house zaqar will do nothing but crumble under one of his siblings' rule. Of that much, he's certain. He locks himself in one of the upper rooms when he gets back, ignores anyone that knocks until they go away. In a way, they're all the same, the rest of his family - the only one that he even wants to contemplate having a discussion with is mother, and she busies herself with so much outside affairs that he only catches glimpses of her throughout the day. Books of magic spells and lore of the family's past are all that can keep him occupied, these days, and even that starts to get dull when it becomes nothing more than another routine. There's a large stack of paperwork on the desk. Cael stares at it, stifles the yawn that leaks through the cracks in his lips as he sits down to finish up the book lying beside it. It's one of the more interesting ones that speak of betrayals within the house itself, the work of servants and traitors in a time when witches were regarded as simply gifted, not gods. Their names don't matter much, not really - what interests him is what drove them to turn against the family in the first place. Yet despite everything, many are already dead, and the ones still alive aren't interesting enough to warrant searching for. After all, they could very well be human, and the effort of taking such a risk makes his insides curl and twist with a sickening sense of premature disappointment. It's so much easier with the servants. Cael traces over one of the summoning circles written on the page and hums idly, gesturing at the replica painted on the ground lazily with one hand, like a king getting ready to pass divine judgement. He's studied summoning enough to know its potential - sometimes fatal - consequences, and the effort required to craft a larger, protective ward is better than the risk of losing books containing thousands of years of family lore. " Come forth." And as the circle underneath his finger begins to glow in tandem with the one on the ground he leans forward, ever so slightly, the gleam in his eyes the only indication that he's even curious at all. ZAYNAB IQBAL i rly hope this is okay...let me know by skype if theres anything i need to fix!

[nospaces] i've been cornering[break] you like a fool[break] till my hands[break] go blue his last master had rings on his fingers and a title to his name. when he gave orders he croaked out his consonants and rattled his syllables, the hoarse rasp of a man who coveted power and let its corrupting influence blacken his lungs. [break][break] his master runs out of breath one day, stops short in the middle of a magic-laced command to gasp like a fish for air. the gleeful servant chars his bones, torches his chambers, and flees the city. [break][break] he’s never much liked zaqar, its ruling elite. on the backs of slaves the white pillars were laid. [break][break] there are subtle cues that mark the arrival of a summoned presence before it’s seen, every practitioner is taught. the temperature drops. pages rustle, dust dances. on his arrival zaynab first tests the net he’s been ensnared in, prods at any weak spots. there are none—it’s a cunningly crafted circle inscribed with runes and sigils he recognizes as the work of house zaqar, of a past, broken fetter that now snaps shut around his neck again, re-forged. [break][break] when the djinni reveals himself he’s in his preferred guise, the faithful copy of a decades-dead serving boy. zaynab floats a few centimeters off the floor, looks at his summoner. he crosses his arms and cocks his head. “you’re a little young for this, don’t you think?” there’s no need for introductions. the djinni’s name is already spelled out on the summoning circle, and zaynab remembers very well the name of the house he hates. The room chills, a small cloud of dust brushes his lips and Cael raises up a hand as if to cough, but doesn't. What materializes isn't what he expects from a former servant of the family - a boy shouldn't possess the knowledge of how to betray and kill when the leash around his neck becomes too tight to bear. A dog should starve itself to fit its tightening collar, not gnaw at the rope leading to its master, obedience keeps its chains tight even as the leash frays and weakens. Children's minds are weak and impressionable - obedience, the zaqar preach as they bury their failures and pray that no one will find them. A boy isn't fit to be a servant, much less head of house(but is he really?), yet they both exist. He wonders who the real child among them is, or if there ever was one to begin with. It's said that a true broken record never gets turned off. Cael shrugs at the broken record of a question that he can't turn off, inclining his head towards the intricate symbols littering the ground as though they contain a better response than he would ever consider giving. How did someone so young get away with betraying the house is probably the better question to ask here, but the answer he expects to receive wouldn't be worth the effort to ask. Most likely a djinn thing. Not very interesting at all. " Tell me about the time you spent serving my ancestors." It's not a request - if it wasn't already clear by the tone in his voice, the way he leans back in his chair makes it nothing short of obvious. ZAYNAB IQBAL

[nospaces] i've been cornering[break] you like a fool[break] till my hands[break] go blue he isn’t expecting an answer—witches, like djinni, are secretive, loath to give anything away, and to answer a question is to relinquish power. the terms of their exchange are set into the glyphs that encircle him and hold him captive. it isn’t an equitable one; zaynab may as well be on his knees, though he’s far too proud to submit. [break][break] when the order he does expect comes, it’s shoddily worded and vague, easy to evade. the boy-witch hasn’t specified when he wants the information, nor how truthful it must be. the djinni remains silent as a statue for a long moment, then smiles insincerely to infuriate his young master. [break][break] “that’s rather impolite. surely you’ve learned your manners by now? a demand won't get you anywhere.” a partial lie—a properly worded demand free of loopholes, he can’t refuse.
