Slow, deliberate steps that led him further and further. His fingers, shifting a black strand, drifted over his chin, hiding the smirk. He had been called for something or the other, dealing with a noble of a higher station. He had to stay on their side, despite how disgustingly annoying that particular noble was. Well, no matter, he was now on the way to exit, but he didn't get to come up here too often - despite how rich and how strong the family was, they had lost hold. Why? Rather simple, by the deceit of his mother, the supposed to be champion, who turned out to be a fraud.
Unfortunate, but since then the jockeying for position was a bit harder. When the smirk left his face, considering his small little surprise he had left for the noble, he felt safer to move on once more. Although, as curiosity always did with people, and particularly himself, he wondered if he could seek out an actual champion. Test their mettle to say the last, and find exactly what made a champion tick. Perhaps, if he was very lucky, he'd encounter one that could amuse him. Long fingers adjusted his clothing, straightening them out, and his hand drifted through his hair.
Presentable? Definitely.
Now to hunt down someone to entertain him, for a time.

parable of the cannibals. | Finding a Champion in the High City is no great measure of skill. They dot the marbled hallways and gleaming streets like peacocks with their feet glued to the floor. An ever-present reminder of the throne's power: soldiers in sleek uniforms, with their ordained fate and their divine blessing. A Champion is the only one who can kill a monster, but they're more than capable of cutting down anything, or anyone else, in the empress' path. Thalia is on one such patrol today. From time to time being put on display is a Champion's lot, but it's hardly the most onerous task she has had to bear. Although none of the gilded nobles usually attract her notice unless they specifically approach her, she notices the dark-haired man as he straightens his clothes, pulls at his hair. She's never seen him before. She drifts over, the dutiful expression of a loyal imperial soldier plastered on her face. "Are you lost, my lord?"RIDQUE GILMUS |

Ah, luckily for him, the High City was saturated with champions. It made his life easier, he wouldn't deny that.
''Not at all, dear Champion.'' he said, dismissively nearly. As if she wasn't worth anything to him, the male taking in the girl before him. For that's what she was - a mere girl to him, a man that's lived years and moved around in circles that long erased his childhood and the innocence that came with it. After a small pause, he gave a smile, deft as he suddenly seemed to realize that she was there. A power play, to not let the so called reputation play him.
''Oh, but I do assume you're a champion correct?'' he added to his statement after that moment. The insult was veiled, implying that, like his mother, she could be a fake. Although, perhaps she wouldn't understand that part of the insult now would she? No, but it was amusing to send something quietly like that. Now perhaps he wouldn't be able to find all of her buttons, but finding at least one was something he'd like.
Plus her presence built him an alibi, which was very useful right now.

parable of the cannibals. | She bows slightly, more out of ingrained instinct than any real desire to pay obeisance to the man. "I am indeed a Champion," she says, tone and face both carefully blank. "A few of us are stationed each day in the High City, in order to serve the Empress, may she live forever, and the court as they go about their business."RIDQUE GILMUS |

''Interesting... I do not often have the chance to come here often.'' he offered, in exchange for her, well nicety. ''Although, I wonder how many of you are actually real...'' he said, rather quietly to himself. But intention made it audible to the girl.
He wanted to ruffle that cold, impassive mask, and he would do what he had to to make it happen. But the champion clause wasn't a weapon it seemed, as she kept her cool. Hmm, what could he use next?
''I'm sure you're all distinguished individuals.'' he added, choosing the pedigree route as the second option..

parable of the cannibals. | "Rest assured, my lord, that every imperial Champion you will encounter in the High City is real. Most of us are found by the salt witches when we are very young, and taken to the military. One hears stories, of course, of men and women pretending to be Champions in rural areas of little consequence where there are none to name their lie, hoping to gain glory and power--" As she spoke, her lips curved faintly in a smile, the first expression besides cool civility to shape her face since she'd begun talking to him. "--but when the Empire hears word of such deceit, they learn swiftly to regret their actions."The smile flickered slightly as he kept speaking, but only to grow larger. "You would not know my house name, my lord, but to serve the Empire as a Champion is a fate I consider a higher honor than any blood runs that through my veins." And then she ventured forth a dart of her own in the conversation: "And who knows who we were in past lives? None can say for certain." RIDQUE GILMUS |
