it's sunny out and you're tending to your garden. trying not to squish too many bugs under your shoes because daddy always says some of them are there to help. but you can't tell the difference between the ones who are helpful and the ones who aren't, you guess you'll leave that to daddy. you've just finished pulling weeds from the garden, and you wipe your forehead with a dirty hand, leaving a smudge of dirt across it. you stand up from the dirt and look around before yelling, "daddy, where's my watering can?"SANTIAGO VIDAL

it's a cold and broken hallelujah | santiago has had war in the marrows of his bones every since he can remember. but lately, they thrum with the blood and bombs of wartime, like a sixth sense long before shara's imperial palace has crumbled.
he is relieved they are gone from there, and he is terrified they are here. there is nowhere to escape to, nowhere to run that will be untouched by war. there is nowhere to escape to but a child's world, where the flowers still bloom and the earth is still soft and wet and the bugs still climb stalks and rest on peaceful leaves.
this is a child's world, one that he's never known. when briella calls for him, santiago's heart nearly jumps out of his chest, and he's at the door before he even registers why she's shouting. he sighs, relieved, running a hand through his hair.
"i don't know, maybe it's around front, i'll go check." he flashes her a smile and circles the side of the house until he finds it by the flowerbeds out front. it's heavy with water, and he lugs it back. |

you almost tell him, 'it's okay, i can go look!' but he's gone before the words can escape your lips. sometimes- sometimes you liked to be doted upon, treated like a princess, as a daughter you figure it's normal. but you like to take care of your garden by yourself, it is the one place where your independence is something you flaunt. he comes back and you go to take the heavy, water-filled watering can from his hands with a grin, "thanks daddy!" the plants need watering, and you'd like to do it yourself. no matter how heavy the watering can might be.
