UNPACK THE SOLUTION, the cream puff had only been a very minuscule reason as to why hugo is about to wake up strapped to his own bed. if she had chased every peasant on every little offense -- well. life is short when you've only got ten out of your full twenty-five to live. the pastry had been an excuse, but any sky-walker would have sufficed. she's shuffled through his belongings. he doesn't appear to be a citizen of the empire. excellent. a man that nobody will give her an earful for if anyone connects the dots. zareen skips over to her victim and uncorks a glass bottle. a black spidery thing lands on the boy's arm, its thin legs darting quickly up his shoulder and onto his face. "i have a feeling that the two of you will be the best of friends." zareen sighs dreamily. she doesn't know if he's awake. frankly, she doesn't care. he rouses to a tickling on his cheek, what feels like little hairs on his skin. his head and limbs are heavy, weighed down by sleep and hugo wants nothing more than to sink back into it. “mmm, stop tickling me,” he mumbles drowsily, screws his eyes shut, and tries to raise an arm to brush off the offending sensation.
he can’t. something presses back down. eyes flying open, hugo lifts his head off the pillow to spot his arms and legs strapped and bound and a girl he kind of recognizes at his bedside. bewilderment’s scrawled all over his face as he stares wide-eyed at the red-haired girl.
“wh-what? why am i—what’s going on? you—” the mystery tickle shifts suddenly, moves over the bridge of his nose.
“what’s on my f-face?” | |

UNPACK THE SOLUTION, "who" zareen stares at him with a lazy expression on her face. "who's on your face. my, you easterners don't have much manners going for you." zareen doesn't actually know what part of the continent that he's from, but everything was pretty much eastward to belet. "it's a pity. groveling is the only charming talent that you lowlanders really have."the spider makes its way to his right eye socket. the middle of its stomach opens, revealing a bright red eye. it was probably a disconcerting sight at eye level, nevermind being directly in the man's face. the spider gives a high pitched sound and forces hugo's eyelids wide apart. ever the gracious translator, zareen supplies: "itadakimasu"the spider offers less warning before it digs its fangs into hugo's eye, opting not to remove the eye from its optic nerves like a good diner. the insults glance off, heard but half-understood. he’s wholly distracted by the thing on his face and what—who, she’d intoned, ominously—it is. he sees it in brief, teasing flashes. it’s blurred and dark, and only when it creeps to his right eye and stops there, hovers spindle legs and curved fangs bare millimeters over his eyeball, does hugo know definitively what it is.
"n-no, get it off, w-why are you—"
the spider’s bloated body opens with surgical precision. his stomach turns over and inside-out, bile rises and chokes him. he panics, thrashes vainly against the bindings, and attempts to squeeze his eyes shut—
a hair of a second too late.
the girl’s voice floats and wraps around his consciousness. a sick squelch, and then vision in his right eye blacks out. hugo dissociates. there’s excruciating pain, but he’s only cognizant of it, doesn’t feel it fully, like numbness in his limbs, pins and needles in skin. there’s a strangled scream that’s wrenched out, but it seems to come from a source estranged from himself, doesn’t belong to him.
hugo does not stay awake. he sinks limp against the sheets. the spider feasts, and when the bowl is vacant, fills it up again. | |
