He doesn’t think anyone wants to be here. Just look around, war is declared and some Sophia-chick decides it’s her birthday, it needs to be celebrated and you must attend. Must is a strong word but considering his father dragged him here, it’s appropriate. The very thought of being here was sickening, the fact that it was a thing and he was here made his eyes roll. He’d spit on the ground, he did. Before he came, on his way inside and just now. Dirty looks are coming his way, and more are naughty than repulsed. He signals for a drink, something strong. A crowd is beginning to gather around him.
He is a councilman’s son, they know, a solider of good status too. But that is not why most of them gather, they are women lonely and desperate and then there are the men. These men have the women on their arm but could not, for a second, gain their attention let alone lift their gaze from his. His mohawk is like a magnificent crest on a general’s helmet, his mask though it only hides his eyes is mysterious. He is the light that attracts the moss, even better they are moss attracted to the flame unaware that they will be burned.
“Skip the pleasantries, gentlemen, I don’t want to be here and neither do your ladies.” The glimmer of jade between his mask flashes, and his drink has arrived, the glass is filled halfway with a brown liquid and three cubes of ice. “To the top, no ice.” It’s gone following his words, and the attendant is sent off. “There is no burn, he wouldn’t notice if there was.
“Who is Sophia, her birthday is nothing but a fallacy to feed an unimaginable and utterly immeasurable ego the likes of which could rival Shara. Are we to fight HER then Shara? We must be strong and well rested,” he pauses only for his drinks. Those around him are biting their tongues, his eyes say it all. He’s looking for a fight and his appetite, his own ego, is truly the one that is immeasurable. Again, there is no burn, the glass is downed like a shot and he lets it fall to the ground. It doesn’t break, say what you will about this party, but it is not cheap, the glass is expensive and the liquor is strong.
He’s reaching for the second, preparing for his fight.

how close was too close? truth be told, sophia did decide that it was her birthday. monsters don't keep accurate dates, see, not unless they're one of those obsessive mountain-gremlins with bulging eyes and leathery wings. whatever day she was born on, the truth didn't matter. what mattered is that she can call upon almost a hundred men and women of value and they would answer her call with their presence. nothing like that could ever be achieved in the northern wastes with anything less than outright hypnotism. what did the truth matter in the face of power? they see what they want to see - a woman worthy of their respect. she may have lied and murdered and stole to make her way to the city proper, but what's important is what these people believe. these people want to think that the black opals glittering across her neck and the hair pearls in her hair are what make her powerful, respectable, civilized, even if the instinct to rip out their jaw and lap the blood from their skulls has never quite died out from inside of her. that's as real as the gentle silk around her shoulders. she approaches the uncomfortable-looking server for a drink and she lifts the wine glass delicately from its tray. the liquid swirls pleasantly in its vessel before settling to a stop. "it's a little early to be this intoxicated, don't you think?" her smile is saintly, but if she cared to look their way, then everyone will see that her eyes are polished steel. "why, the dances haven't even begun."

Their eyes have shifted, and they shift once again as he puts down the glass. The lady herself has arrived and she is, for what it’s worth, right. But this is not defeat, people are quick to change sides it is not because they are untrustworthy, it is a matter of tact. And you never want to be on the losing side, which is what his approach was – the loser’s tantrum. “Then should we begin, since the lady of honor has arrived. I would,” he pauses to correct himself. Fix his sleeves, brush back his hair, and wipe his hands of course. “Offer my own if I were in a more presentable state, but I slur and stumble. Perhaps, if you can imagine, there is someone worthy to take your hand and lead you in a waltz.” Cue Zaheesh, to be honest. SOPHIA ROSENBURG

how close was too close? she hates conversing with drunks. conversing with sober well-to-do gentlemen was a matter of formula. a logical, linear progression, even if no meaningful dialogue would take place. conversing with him would require a little more finesse. luckily, sophia had learned early on that as long as she didn't take a drunk man too seriously, neither would anyone else. "the ngeshtin-ana might be a little strong for someone your age." quite a few guests chuckle at that joke. "there are plenty of servers who can bring you some lemonade, should you need to recover before the main event."
trust me when i say that sophia was sorely tempted to put zaheesh on the blacklist AFZAL NEJEM

There is a laughter and he grins with them, it is a joke he did not get. His grin is foolish, his teeth are sharp and vicious. He’s looking around, what is there to see – nothing, so he turns to Sophia. She is real, eyes roll at the thought this is real. You can see he’s amused, his smile is full then it is hidden away. He does not know how to feel, so full of. What, exactly. “Allow me to take your hand, lead you in a waltz. I promise you intimacy,” he licks his lips and looks down. Afzal’s eyes flare like a kid who has discovered magic when he looks to Sophia. “Without the need for ngeshtin-ana, or anything else.” SOPHIA ROSENBURG

how close was too close? she laughs, and it's a pretty sound in the sense that a violin produces a pretty sound, regardless of the musician's intention. but that's all it is. sophia is reminded of the centerspine. full of madmen and child-killers alike, everyone more or less knew how the story ends. the beast swallows the girl whole or the girl-child becomes more than she was. now she stands in irkalla and sophia no longer knows if she is child or beast. "what have you done to earn the favor of house rosenburg, i wonder? should i not be offering this dance to your prolific father instead?" twist the logic into solid ground, spin the logic into something nice. fingers dance upon the loom (be sure not to prick your fingers twice). the game is still honorable. that does not mean that it has yet been won.AFZAL NEJEM

“Then go find him, dance with him. He will be shocked, and deny at first. Say something sweet and cunning about how he does not deserve such an honor from both a beauty and the host. No, he must,” his fingers snap, fiddle and push on his ear for a moment. He’s looking down and smiling, again, he looks around at the faces they are all the same.
“He must praise you first, then praise you again then give you something sweet like diamonds or pearls a gift for you to see and for everyone to see. Then, he can graciously and humbly accept your hand and dance with you for a song or two. It will be sweet and classy and everyone here,” his voice raises as if he is ready to jump,
“Will do the same because that is etiquette, class. Maybe during your dance, you’ll exchange a few words nothing lasting, my father knowing him as I do may offer you a business venture. Perhaps something he has thought about for some time, or something on the spot, he is witty and cunning in the manner of everyone else here is. He will take the opportunity to grasp at the house of Rosenburg. But this is where I differ,” his voice raises again. He is ready to jump.
“Where they will address you in a manner that befits you that you all believe to be entitled to, no words exchanged will be lasting or genuine. I offer you intimacy. The kind felt through a soft exchange of words, the kind that can only last if it is pursued earnestly. Like a man who offers his hand to the lady because he wants to dance with her.” He extends his hand. “A dance that does not need to be brought.” He offered her the, main event, with an excitement to his eyes and smile that one only gets after a great victory.
He was the main event.

how close was too close? if only she hadn't heard the same from a thousand men a thousand times over. not half-drunkenly disparaging her might have helped a little. "in short, you offer only what every man from the noblest of generals to the lowliest of dishwashers can offer." sophia inclines her head a little bit to the left so that fewer guests will see her mischievous smile. "perhaps you should attach a more exact value to your company. i am a lady, monsieur. i am used to being wanted."far longer than he can imagine. AFZAL NEJEM

They’re laughing, it’s a sort murmur amongst the people but they are laughing. Laughing at him, he manages a grin, he’s laughing with them too on the inside. His eyes are filled with excitement as he brings his hand close and spits in it. There isn’t much there, he had said so much after all, but it’s there in the palm of his hand that he extends back. “Is this enough, heh, should I add more? Blood, perhaps.” SOPHIA ROSENBURG

how close was too close? the company around them gasp incredulously. sophia remains unruffled. "i see." or rather, she doesn't. she doesn't see why she should entertain his company for any longer. sophia finishes the remainder of her glass and passes it to a server. "all things considered, i will have to respectfully decline. good evening to you."sophia decides that she might have to specifically assign someone to watch the troublesome boy from afar. if he offends anyone important or volatile -- well. that's what the guards are for. in the meantime, she has other guests to attend to. He does not want it to end. Surely there was something he could do to stop it. He isn’t after all in a position to. To embarrass his father anymore. The fact that he has not been interrupted yet means, in some way or another, he has not been a grandstanding humiliation. Afzal wipes his hands clean on his pants with two strokes and proceeds to correct his hair. “Thank you Sophia! You’re a class act! A real lady, next time I’ll bring you pearls! I’ll battle all kinds of sea monsters for them too, nothing less to get a dance with you!” Afzal eyes are wide and his tone is gleeful, gleeful and jumping. Boy oh wee, he was sure any more and his stomach would’ve went 180. SOPHIA ROSENBURG
