 not a creature's stirring. the moon is full and bright in the sky, casting its wan light over the foot of his bed. he sits up, shoves the covers back, and swings his legs over the edge. stifling an indulgent yawn, ezra rocks to his feet and quickly dresses, then creeps out into the hallway on tiptoe. the bedroom door whines as it swings open, excruciatingly drawn out and deafening to his ears. he winces, heart hammering, and hurriedly pulls it shut. it’s only now, as he attempts to ghost down the hall and the staircase, that ezra realizes the floorboards creak considerably under his lightest steps. almost like they’re trying to give him away, to call attention to the paranoid adolescent sneaking off in the middle of the night. shitty, traitorous house. finally he makes it out the front door, sucks in fresh, chilled air and exhales heavily in relief. from his hand dangle scuffed boots, well-worn and dulled. ezra treks barefoot until he’s past the manor’s gate. after a rapid look-over to assure he’s alone, he tugs on the boots and crouches down to fix the laces, head lowered and focused on the simple task. ezra has about a second longer of ignorant complacency before he looks up and nearly jumps out of his skin at the sudden appearance of probably the very last person he wants to meet in this moment. |

the fact of the matter is that isaiah doesn't sleep much. for a plethora of reasons - graveyard duty, touching up a weapon, the occasional night terror, carving - that start to sound like excuses the more he'd list them off. but the moon is up, and so is he. generally he alternates between outside the house and in, but he remains on grounds. he knows the blueprints like the back of his hand, has every crack and loose board memorized (which, coincidentally, is why he makes such a big fuss over additions to the house or some renovation - it throws him off, and he doesn't like uncertainty). he's lingering out by a window when he hears it, the groan of wood underfoot. this isn't primo's wing, and it's not that he can't think of many people that would try and break into his heir's, because he can. it's just that he knows who lives where, and his assumptions were usually near the mark. he follows from outside, glancing through windows and keeping a close eye. he circles around the house near the front door (the front door? really?) and leans against a statue, arms crossed. he looks on disapprovingly at ezra. he almost loses his balance and topples over—to add insult to injury—but thankfully escapes further embarrassment with a stumbling, inelegant scramble to his feet. his lashes lower over a hooded glare at the bodyguard, the shock of white hair spectral against the marbled statue. "i’m not going anywh—” ezra backtracks then, quickly deciding he won’t give up his mission and trudge back to bed so easily. there’s a defiant set to his chin, to his narrowed gaze. “it’s none of your business. go back to…whatever it is you do at two in the morning. creep.” did isaiah even sleep? in his recollection ezra only ever remembers the elder lurking in shadowy corners and materializing whenever the fancy to fuck shit up struck him. |

he waits patiently for ezra to collect himself, frowning. and the fact that he even tries to make an excuse is laughable. there are no innocent reasons in this house. "it's my business now." technically, he was supposed to protect primo, but it wasn't like the rest of the family was off limits. and, frankly, primo could take care of himself. "should i go wake him?" he offered. he meant it as a warning, but it came out sounding like a threat—poor choice of words. bottom line, isaiah wasn't letting ezra leave the grounds alone. it’s pointless pretending he has any leverage against the bodyguard. they both know he's as good as cornered, so when isaiah brings up primo ezra tenses and looks away, a shadow of uncertainty passing over frozen features. low blow, isaiah. he scowls at a clump of weeds in the distance and envisions crushing the dandelion’s head in his palm. bitterness coats his sullen reply. “no.” as if he’d answer otherwise—isaiah’s just being a dick. the thought has him grinding his words out between clenched teeth, clenched hands. “you can come, alright? goddess, why do you even care what i do?”it's mostly rhetorical. ezra neither expects nor wants an answer. |

technically speaking, ezra has some kind of authority over isaiah - which is why he's a little bit intrigued that the son gives in. but he shrugs, humble even on autopilot. "it's my job."but it isn't his job to know why, really, and asking seems like a breach of privacy; but he's breaking all the rules anyway. "so what are you doing?"EZRA BET-SHUL |

“your job. right.” he grits out and says no more, swallows back down the rest of the acidic words rising up like bile. he won’t give away the insecurity that underlies what isaiah probably thinks is childish, senseless animosity—there’s a doubt ezra doesn’t admit, the knowledge that in primo’s eyes he might be the child, the weaker of the two to be watched and protected. he’s always looked up to the elder, ezra thinks, despite their nominal positions in the family. only now does it dawn on him that he desperately wants to catch up, surpass isaiah, do the protecting. he shoves his hands into the pocket of his overcoat, turns on his heel without warning and starts down the road into the city. “i’m going to make a business deal. for the family.” |
