midday, sunny, people swarming and etta is careful with her body, with her hands. she has no enhanced healing, no way to make herself better in a short span of time, so instead her hands are wrapped in white bandages underneath the white gloves she wears now that are slightly stained with red.
the landlady at the hotel was nice to her, gave her bandages, washed the red stains out as best she could and didn't charge her extra. "you better return that cloak to the boy who gave it to you, young lady," she said. "why," etta asking in return. the older lady had some sort of smile on her face as she scrubbed the white cloth, "because i'm sure he'll appreciate it."
there are soldiers upon soldiers in the city, but it isn't hard to find one willing to talk to her. she starts with business, ("i'm looking for someone") and then goes into the important bits ("he's a solider" "his name is cameron") one of the soldiers laughs, asks if they're an item, questions her more as the other one runs off. she understands some of the words he mentions, vaguely from romance songs she's been requested to sing, vaguely from words whispered into her ears under the cover of night.
either way, most of the questions of this particular soldier go unanswered. "i have no reason to answer you," is her answer to most of his questions. he gives up eventually, and they wait in silence for the older soldier to return with the man she's looking for.

in the daylight hours, he doesn't think about it, about etta, any more that he thinks about anything else. she makes a recurrent appearance in his dreams though, in blood-soaked talons and ripped skin and inscrutable eyes. he wants to forget it, wants to think their every chance meeting is their last—a clean, unsentimental goodbye.
he's stationed outside what remains of the high city when another soldier comes to fetch him. he doesn't think much about the request, complies and follows with an indifferent nod.
but it's etta, of course. his gaze automatically falls to her gloved hands, trace the shape of imagined talons. then cameron looks at her face, more human in the flesh than in half-remembered, half-created nightmares, some sort of gravity tugging the corners of his mouth down.
"you were looking for me?"

"yes," she answers curtly. the other soldiers return to their duties and etta finds her gaze meeting cameron's. from the bag slung on her shoulder, she pulls out the cloak he gave her. clean, pristine, folded nicely by the landlady who didn't ask her questions about it. "i'm returning this to you," she states rather simply.

he barely glances at the cloak before returning to her face, in a searching look that fails to glean the answers he wants. the writing's illegible, a scrawl.
absent-mindedly, he shakes bronze curls out of hard eyes. there's a faint displeasure in their steely glint, in the downturn of his lips.
"you didn't have to," cameron murmurs.

"i'm not plastered against every wall in shara," she says it like it's the simplest thing in the world. to her, it is. if he had turned her in, reported her to the officials her name and face would be all over shara and the nice landlady would not have been so nice. "why didn't you report me?" she says, she doesn't hesitate to speak aloud in a normal voice. the busyness around them drowns out their voices to those attempting to listen.

he smiles suddenly, humorlessly. "so you wouldn't be on every wall in shara." then how would he forget? send the memory off neatly tied, sink it into the river, the metaphorical subconscious sludge? it isn't a solution to the problem, cameron knows. everything inevitably comes back to haunt him as nightly phantasms—but he's never cared much for sleep to begin with.
"do you have nowhere else to go?" he makes no move to take back the cloak.

the whole world could be in the palm of one of her hands. she could leave here and never look back yet she has not left yet. she thinks to herself, this is the longest she's stayed in one place for an extended period of time. her lips form some sort of smile, one that isn't nice. "i could go anywhere," she says. "yet here i am." she says it almost like a joke.
she notices his lack of action towards his cloak, and shoves it towards him, almost like she doesn't want to touch it. which is true, she wants to be rid of it like she wants to be rid of him, but there's a little part of her that says to keep him around if only because he's interesting. she wants to see what he'll do, how he'll react. she wants to open him up and watch his bleeding heart beat and then eat him alive.
what a sick fascination.

"here you are," he parrots flatly, gathers the fabric into his arms. freshly-washed, it smells of soap and cleanliness. there's no trace of blood on it, no remainder of the grime and murk of their last meeting in lower town.
they could part ways here and now—again and again—and maybe this time would be the last, cameron thinks. but he's tired of uncertainty, tired of the dreams.
"i wonder when i'll stop seeing you."

"maybe it's fate," etta says. it's like a joke because she doesn't understand what fate is. she knows the word, but not the meaning.

the word's the clincher. it feels like the air's been rarefied, as if his lungs have collapsed and his stomach's twisted into a knot. his fingers curl tighter into the cloak, knuckles whiten.
fate isn't funny, not to him.
but cameron presses his lips together, quietly weathers the internal storm the word inspires. then he's calm once more, has made up his mind.
"come with me," he repeats: to take fate into his own hands.
