He had heard things, thing said under the breath of men and women who gathered at the fringes of his momentary hiding place (though he had no need to hide with a face of a human). They spoke of the fire months ago, still whispering about the culprit still on the loose. Pulling his cloak tighter around him, he strained his ears to catch the rest of their gossip. It moved on to the suspicious deaths, bodies found burned beyond recognition—deaths he actually had caused in panic. His description passed from mouth to ear, his human guise. His heart hammered frantically against his ribcage. It fought the brittle bones for freedom from their constricting cage. The alley disappeared, scenery flashing by as he ran without realizing he had even started. Panic rose up to choke him worse than his stinging lungs and constricted chest. His head was full of hands seizing him, slamming him hard against a brick wall. Fire came to his defense. He hadn’t meant to kill them. It wasn’t his fault. It was self-defense. Humans didn’t care.  and the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee he's been on edge ever since news of the emperor's death had reached his ears. like the entire floor has been pulled out from under his feet. he doesn't like to admit that the assassination had put him in a less charitable mood. that's a part of him that can still feel disappointment, a part of him that he claimed to have discarded a long time ago. stefan had memorized the contents of the report. he remembers the face, but he doesn't expect that to be of much help. the smell of charred flesh is a more telltale sign. the trail turned cold a few streets back, but so has the number of streets that his target could possibly have gone. he chooses the less populated streets since he doesn't hear the screaming of burning civilians. he can't afford to become distracted by cursory details -- stefan has been working for long enough to know what is a false trail and what isn't. he prioritizes silence over speed. he has no desire to become the monster's next victim. his boots make no sound, even against the roughness of the lesser-maintained streets. in the abandoned street, even stefan's own heartbeat seems quiet. he watches for the tell-tale signs of soot along the edges of his cloak. just for a moment, and then there would be no more hesitation. Away from the whispering, he is able to calm his fluttering heart. Each deep breath he sucks in brings him further from the brinks of a panic attack. No one had seen his face. No one still living. He was safe, or so he told himself while he sat propped against the wall catching his breath. But the evidence, soot and burnt fabric, was displayed for any searching eye to see on the cloak he hugged around him. It incriminated him, condemned him. And he was unaware. His doom was closing in, silent over the crumbling streets. Then he heard the soft footsteps. His bright red eyes directed their attention towards the sound. Fintan noticed him too late. "Can I help you mister?" He started wide-eyed at the approaching man, as it was obvious he was coming towards him. STEFAN FINLEY |

and the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee he looks like a child. stefan won't say that he's lost his sympathy for children. that's not what had happened. what's important is that his sympathy didn't matter in an empire hungry for its own brand of justice, no matter how harshly applied. sympathy doesn't save anyone. those who cannot control themselves must be controlled by others. that's why he's here. that's why he's keeping the bile inside of him down as he approaches in front of the boy. "i think that you are the one who needs help." except nobody knew what was the right thing for them. in the midst of such confusing emotions such as guilt and terror, nobody could see when it was their turn to make the right decision. those kinds of people didn't have the right to such choices at all. He stares blankly at the man, this bringer of death. The fears his presence stirs up are validated yet he doesn't feel terror consuming him. A terrible bitterness rises up instead. It twists his face, warping his young face to something tired and weathered. He looks ancient in those fleeting moments. "No one will help me." He feels hallow and hopeless. The deaths he causes were accidental, done out of self-defense. But what did this man care, he was never caged or hunted for being different. He laughs, a empty, mirthless laugh. "Your kind only know prejudice and hate, even to each other. I wear your kind's face yet they still attack me for no reason. They kill each other without mercy, and punish those who defend themselves. And your here to punish me for defending myself."But he doesn't want to die. Fintan won't allow his death to come so easily. He may be a phoenix, but he kind doesn't rise from their ashes like they had before. The salt witches saw to that with their awful magic. and the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee stefan isn't interested in moral debate. he isn't interested in the philosophy of their races. he isn't interested in being swayed. he only knows what he must do. "i am here because of what you have done and what you will do." he doesn't seem angry. people will hurt and destroy the things that he has sworn to protect because of a million and one reasons of their own creation. he had accepted this early on. "rest assured, you mean nothing to me. there are less people interested in your excuses than you think." his lips twist into an awful smile that he had learned as a child. there's no need to give chase. stefan is far more skilled than that. he pulls a small crossbow from his waist and notches a bolt. one will be all that he needs. ready, aim, fire. The hypocrisy in human logic is almost enough to twist a mirthless laugh from his chapped lips. They killed each other more brutally than most monsters. Yet he was going to be killed because humans assaulted him, brought him so much terror that the flame had rose to his rescue. They devoured those awful humans until only their charred remains were left. He never intended to kill. He refuses to die, refuses to let his light be extinguished. He may be a phoenix, the immortal bird, but death is still frightening. Witches magic had tainted the magic which gave his kind their rare gift, tainted their resurrections in ways he couldn’t comprehend, and he doesn’t know what would happen to him if he was killed—he doesn’t he want to know. So he is going to run until this ruthless monster of a human was out of sight and he can breathe easily knowing that he had escaped to live another day. Running would only postpone his end, he realized, but he didn’t have it in him to deliberately kill a soul. If he did, he might have avoided the explosion of pain erupting in his chest. Hot blood splashed out of his body; hallow bones snapping under the force of the arrow’s blow. He staggers a few more steps. It’s all he can manage before the pain brings his fragile body to its knees. Fintan struggles for each breath, and each one entices fresh waves of pain to blossom. His red eyes turn up to the sky, the bright blue expanse he has longed for all his life. Would he be dying if he could fly? He knows he wouldn’t be if he could kill. “I don’t want to die,” his pitiful voice sounds over the gurgling of blood in his lungs. “I never meant to kill anyone… I was afraid, so afraid. and the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee he'll never really get used to watching people die. and that's the problem, isn't it? it's a problem to be drowned, over and over. stefan doesn't have to solve the problem permanently - he just has to make sure that his feelings make no difference in the outcome. if the goddess wouldn't be kind to this child, then neither will he. that's just how things are. there's no need to taunt the child any further. stefan walks up to his dying body and watches to confirm that the world will never know of fintan's crimes again.
