Castion is, in a word, unpleasant. He's arrogant, prone to condescension, and cares about maybe two people in the entire world. Those two people could make a convincing argument that being loved by Castion is a worse fate than being hated by Castion.

Castion was raised the eldest of four children in a grimy hovel in Shul, a heartbeat before the start of the peasant uprising. His father was killed in one of the many bloody skirmishes that racked Castion's home when Castion was four, and his mother was taken in a raid by Imperial soldiers when he was nine. A lesser person might have fled from the responsibility of being saddled with three children to raise at the age of nine, but Castion, while he cannot call himself good, has always prided himself on being great. He scavenged from battlefields, picked what little of value hadn't been taken off the twisted remains of dead men, and tried to keep his three little sisters fed. Still, he was only a child. By the time he'd turned eighteen, only the youngest of his siblings was left, the other two just nameless victims of violence and poverty. Castion took Marianna and left their hovel behind, moving to an apartment in the city of Shul where he used his first flickering understanding of his power to turn small tricks and carve out a living.

Castion stayed like that for three years, until his sister was of her majority and found a husband--a rough man, but good at heart, and certainly capable of providing for Marianna. Castion then began to expand his influence in the city, charging high prices for curses and hexes. In a city as treacherous and paranoid as Shul, a witch with no alliance for anything save gold was a valuable commodity. Castion was soon contracted by various noble families and businesses, sometimes even performing jobs for opposing sides at the same time. But like any double-crosser, despite his prodigious talent, he was found out. Fleeing the city ahead of three assassins, and two bounty-hunters, Castion stumbled through a succession of very uncomfortable carts and wagons, until he found himself at Four Rivers Crossing. There he boarded the first ship he saw and sailed for anywhere that wasn't home: a new man, capable of becoming anything he wanted.

Traveling for a few months on his own, he encountered the Head of House of a prominent noble line and felt an immediate draw to him--perhaps it was the power in Castion sensing a splendid opportunity. Regardless, he's attached himself to the lord, and has even begun to care for him, as much as Castion can bring himself to care for someone.



Castion is a black witch with some primal tendencies. His full spell list is cut for length. On a more mundane note, he's also very good at being unseen and unheard.
