death and the maiden. | The people in the village the garrison is stationed at say that there is a witch who can tell your fortune in the mountains. Thalia believes them. Witches have told her fortune all her life. The witches of Belet ruled her future with their power struggles. The salt witches gave her a new fate in the name of the empire. It does not seem strange to her that here, in the bleak outcrops of the Centerspine from whence no men return to the world of the living, that here there is a witch who will tell her fortune. It seems fitting. She waits for one of the legions' few and treasured rest days, when the soldiers have a few hours to themselves, and she slips out of town to begin the long walk to the witch's cabin. The wind bites with teeth like knives. Thalia trudges on, dressed only in her imperial uniform. It is a weak barrier against the cold; it is designed rather for freedom of movement, yielding fabric that does not rip under her strength. In battle, after all, the blood runs hot. She does not notice the wind when she fights. In time enough, she arrives at her destination. She looks up at the sky, tracking the sun. There is plenty of day left before she has to be back at the garrison. With a blank expression, she raps on the door. CERUL D'AMORE |

you're the magician's assistant in their dreams for once cerul was startled by the sound of knocking, dragging himself into a sitting position upon his bed at the back of the cabin. he had been divining for personal reasons, mind shifted out of this plane of existence and exploring among the stars. tarot cards, tea leaves and bone tossing were fun and games for more mundane appearances, for more mundane individuals, but the real secrets lie in communing with the universe itself. a grumble later and he was able to pull himself fully out of bed, neatly pressing his hair down from the mess it was making all over his shoulders and face. he looked practically disheveled-- with how angry the wind seemed today he didn't expect to see any visitors. he had to chide himself for subconsciously blocking out the quiet alarm bells that rang in his head every time someone got close to the area. he didn't bother with a shirt despite the fact that he could have just snapped one on, a kilt of black feathers concealing his lower half. as always he had to throw up the illusion around his horns, working his thoughts back to the here and now. despite the minor annoyance at the persistence of whoever came to visit the fey conjured up a bit of tea onto the reading table, a delicate glass display that let steam fill the cozy room. maybe some company would do him so good. he shuffled to the door and opened it, giving the girl a once-over before ushering her inside with a simple statement. "you look positively chilled."if the mortal wanted anything else from the fortune teller she'd have to speak up and make it know, otherwise he did motion at a chair and the tea so neatly placed out. death and the maiden. | Er. Well, he certainly looks like a witch. Thalia wrenches her gaze away from his black-feathered kilt and then stalls out on his bare chest. Wasn't he freezing? Maybe not. If she were a witch, she'd certainly have a spell constantly activated at all times to keep her shielded from the weather. Maybe he had just had the same idea. Somehow she finds herself in a chair, her hands wrapped around a mug of hot tea. "The weather is certainly a challenge," she said mechanically, still somewhat in shock. "I'm surprised you can stand it out here in such clothing."
Goddess, what was she thinking insulting a witch, commentating on his clothing choices? Even if it was by accident. Thalia buried her face in her tea and took a long sip to buy herself a moment of thought. It was surprisingly bitter. Perhaps he'd steeped it too long. That seemed like a witch-y thing to do, to be so lost in spell that-- Her train of thought broke off. Thalia doubled over in sudden pain, the cup falling from her nerveless hands. One hack, two hack, three hack: oh, there was some blood coming out of her throat onto her palm. Somehow she managed to wheeze out the words "I'm sorry for the mess," in between coughing up blood and then choking on it. CERUL D'AMORE |

you're the magician's assistant in their dreams cerul took no offense to anything said-- quite the contrary, actually, he found the female rather interesting for multiple reasons. the fey always had a soft spot for the pretty ones. he /could/ be called vain but it's easier to just take him as he is, what he is. a quirked eyebrow later, such a common expression on his face, and he was moving to his usual seat; feathers glimmering in the light of day that shone through the windows. "that begs the question, if you're aware as you are that the weather is, well, how it is, what are you doing traveling through it? if you're here for a reading-- as any other reason someone would come to my cabin is lost on me-- there's no reason it could not have waited until this passed. or is it-"it was when he saw her bring the cup to her lips that everything clicked in his head. what he had done. what was about to happen. he lunged immediately. goddamnit! he wasn't supposed to murder the customers. it was bad for business! somehow it had slipped his mind that feyfood was poisonous to mortals. a second later and he was frozen, half in the air, arm reached out for thalia and the falling cup that soon shattered. glass and blood covered the table and floor, the fey's jaw tight. well, fuc- she was alive. she was pained, obviously, but her body was fighting out the dangerous magic in the tea. for maybe the third time in the entirety of this century he's been alive cerul was caught completely and utterly off guard. she didn't even have the scent of a witch which wouldn't guarantee her survival anyways. this was unprecedented. it was... weird. a grand wave of his arm later and everything disappeared; blood, tea, cups, everything out of place returned to whatever dark abyss cerul had dominion over. "... bad brew."a hand gently pressed into the other's back, soothing the best as he could while he waited for whatever process she was going through to end and the damage to be gone. "my apologies."THALIA DE LUCA

death and the maiden. | For one terrifying heartbeat Thalia is convinced the pain will never cease, that she will exist in this moment, wracked with agony and bent over like an invalid, forever--but then it stops, of course. All things end, given time. The only difficultly is learning patience. She straightened up in her hair and wiped her mouth clean with her right sleeve. "It's fine," she says. "I am not so easily harmed, even by spoiled tea." Faint twists of fire are still churning in her stomach, but the damage is no longer incapacitating. She relaxes into her soldier's facade while her body processes the last of the tea. "I am indeed interested in a reading," she continues. "The people where my legion is stationed say that you are a witch who can scry the future." A small, genuine smile twitches over her face without her knowledge. "My life has a history of being dictated by witches and I have found myself at a crossroads. I was curious to see what your magic might tell me."CERUL D'AMORE |

you're the magician's assistant in their dreams cerul noted that quickly and with a small bit of distressed which he managed to wave away, returning curtly to his seat and leaning forward on his arms. monsters he could handle. witches, he could handle. mortals without a lick of magic in their soul fighting off what could be considered guaranteed death? not something he was particularly comfortable around. "right."teeth tugged on his lips, the pain of the human shell not reaching his brain at all. he made sure to stop before it became a nervous habit. nervous? him? ha. just confused, perplexed maybe. this was something new to him. a fluke? maybe the lack of intent caused the feyfood to not be very strong...? oh well, she hardly seemed a threat otherwise. besides, she was honest and friendly enough. "ah, i see. while i am one to rarely turn away any customers i do have to offer a fair bit of personal advice," eyes flashed a soft violet, the smallest hint of mirth blossoming in the back of his head. he wondered what her reaction might be if the 'witch' she was going to for help was anything but. "you shouldn't rely on magic to tell your destiny for you forever," not that he was one to speak "it would do you good to branch outside of your own comfort zone and see what fate deals you."
"take this as you will but note that i have had a long life here telling the fortunes of the common folk and know a fair bit about how the universe works" he was being sincere, of course, but it didn't really change the facts. "regardless, a reading," a snap later and various bones of shapes and sizes were laid out on the table before him. "i ask one thing and only one thing in return for my services. a secret. something within your heart that you do not allow others to see or hear. you may be rest assured that nothing said in this cabin will ever be repeated elsewhere-- the fact that thebes is still standing is a testament to that fact.""i am very interested to know what you might be hiding within that careful exterior of yours."

death and the maiden. | Thalia's hand twitches for the comfort of the tea cup before remembering it was long gone. There would be no shield of ceramic or chance to buy precious seconds of thought in a long drink. Not that there ever had been, with the brew soured. Still, as he talks, she'd almost prefer the poisoning. For his advice about fate, she only nods her head politely in assent. She could explain she is a champion, bound by a fate as soft as cotton and unyielding as steel, and that she has long since resigned herself to that fact; all she seeks now is the ability to peer ahead through the mists to see what lies at the end of her ordained path. But she is too busy chewing over his request to bother with that explanation. She stalls. "Is it fair to assume that the reading I get is only as good as the secret I offer?"CERUL D'AMORE |

you're the magician's assistant in their dreams She seemed nervous. Good. It was always the ones who were lying, or who didn't have anything particularly interesting about them, that jumped to fulfill his request and spill their guts. This? This was so much better. Maybe he'd learn just what she was, exactly, to withstand his magic-- but she could always just be another monster in disguise. He didn't think that was much of a secret to her anyways, with how she acted... Mmnnn... oh yes. "You'd be correct to assume as such, darling, but do not worry. Importance is not subjective here. If it seems like it's important to you than you will get the best I can offer. If you instead tell me that you stole from your family's cookie jar when you were five because you wanted to buy sweets from the local shop, then, well... I might be able to guess your breakfast food of choice tomorrow morning." He was speaking from experience, a dark glimmer of annoyance flickering momentarily before it faded. "However, you tell me what you truly don't want to say and I should be able to help you over this block in your path."THALIA DE LUCA

death and the maiden. | Her hands twist over each other in her lap. She can live in stillness, but does not love it. Life is motion and heat, and the quick churning of thought like water over rocks. There is no place for stillness in Thalia's comprehension of life. Regardless, she makes herself freeze as she considers his question. There are two paths before her, she knows. Two secrets she keeps close to her chest, like a parody of a lover's knot or a beloved locket. Her heart yearns toward the easier one to say; the one she knows some of her fellow soldiers see in her already when she lowers her sword, blood-splattered and wild-eyed. But his eyes when he gave her his answer: she saw truth in them, and she needs the truth now as she has never needed it before. The road less traveled, then. "I am not kind for the sake of others, nor do I sacrifice myself for them. It is all for myself. A calculated act for what it will gain me, when I am judged. I am not a good woman. I only want to be. But more than I want to be a good woman I want to be saved; I want only to save myself. And if it was sin that would lift my soul to the highest reaches of heaven to sit at the side of the Goddess, that would save me from damnation, instead of compassionate deeds, I fear I would not even pretend to be a good woman. I would become whatever it took to claw myself up."CERUL D'AMORE |

you're the magician's assistant in their dreams It seems the collected soldier wasn't as in touch as she liked to come off as. Cerul would have laughed if it wouldn't have been rude, but he knew better than most as to how it felt. How you had to flatter others to get to where you desired and what you wanted. How you had to pretend. It didn't bother him as much as it did the human girl, of course not, but the thoughts still stand in the back of the expanses of his mind. She was a bright mortal, an interesting one, quickly captivating him. She said her paths had been chosen and directed by witches for her entire life-- what was it about her, then, that made it necessary? It's not like she didn't have the power to save herself, or direct herself, no? She definitely seemed driven enough. He actually snuffed out that curiosity before it consumed him. She held up her end of the bargain and she did it well. It was his turn. "That is quite a secret of the soul, my fair lady. I appreciate your compliance.
It is time for your reading of similar value, no? Give me your hands."
The bones he had laid out earlier faded from the table with a flick of his wrist, arms extending and welcoming to take hers.
"If there was anything in particular you want me to look in to, speak your mind now or fate will do its own course."
He wanted to give her the option-- consider it a personal favor drawn from the abundant benevolence of the fey. She might not be able to choose her fate but she could choose how she reached it. THALIA DE LUCA

death and the maiden. | Thalia shifted uncomfortably in her seat as the man spoke. She had expected revulsion at her confession, or for judgment. She would have welcomed it, almost. But while she was not the best at reading people, years of grubbing on the street and in the army (they were not so different, in the end) had beaten into her the skill of detecting hostility from a man's most trivial body language, the knowledge that would let you claw back your life in the bare few moments before he acted. But she could not read this man's face. She sensed nothing in him but the gratitude expressed in his words and that fact both repulsed and comforted her. Thalia reached out for his hands with her own, suppressing her inclination to shiver at the flesh to flesh contact. This was too important to ruin with her own petty fears. In the wake of what she'd already said, which could never be unsaid though the words might never leave this cabin, asking him to scry the future she desired seemed a trifling matter. It was a slim chance, she knew--but she would have paid in blood and gold for the mere shadow of hope. "There was a woman," she said. "We--well, I loved her, at least." Her mouth twisted in distaste around the words. Unspoken she could pretend they were untrue. Not now. Not ever again. "We parted. I want to know if there is a way for us to live together in this world without. Without being bent to the laws of fate and killing each other."CERUL D'AMORE |

you're the magician's assistant in their dreams She seemed twitchy-- uncomfortable, even. That wasn't an odd vibe to give out, really, not after spilling something so deeply personal to who you'd find a complete stranger. Still, Cerul found it interesting. Maybe he undervalued how much her true self tore at the recesses of her heart like the claws of a hungry beast. And then she gave her request and his eyes brimmed with violet, lips pulling into what could only described as a perfectly shiteating cheshire grin. Now that was just delicious. By what she said he could only assume she was--- how did the mortals put it? He heard so many things from the town of Thebes... A hero? No, Champion. She was locked in some sort of eternal, angst ridden wrestling match with a Monster or some such. Cerul personally had very little knowledge of the exact workings of the... fate binding? This was his first time ever dealing with, from his view, someone who was involved in it. ... Did they generally fall in love with each other, or was this a special case? He couldn't have asked for a better customer. The display faded to a low purr of a smile, color dripping from their gaze until nothing seemed off at all. "As you wish, my fair lady.I will see what I can do. Rest assured, however, if I may be so bold...
The future is never definite. Regardless of what the signs tell, you can change what may be. That is all I will speak on the matter," it was obvious he had taken a special interest in her, noted by the fact that he was weighing in despite how little it actually affected him. He fell into a hum, eyes closing, lips parting. Normally he threw up some lightshows-- glyphs and ropes of colors-- but those were all just an aesthetic. He's tried to cut back with mortal customers as it can be rather startling, and it was entirely... well, unnecessary. He just found it fun! His fingers twitched and squeezed in the grasp of the soldier's, low murmurs breaking through the haze of his mind until, after a minute or two, his eyes flickered open. He quickly dropped the Champion's hands, pulling his own back and clasping them tightly together. "It seems your fate is very, very closely intertwined with hers, as expected. I regret to inform you that your story does not call for a happy ending.
However...
It would appear she still cares for you. Emotions are a fickle thing, but they are strong, and they are prominent in the paths carved out for the future. That is all I can tell you."THALIA DE LUCA
