The children in the village say your mother is crazy. You know they're right, but you try to fight them at first anyway, out of loyalty. They shove your face in the dirt and send you home with scraped knees. After a while, you stop trying to defend her. 

Your mother says a god was your father, and so you are a god as well. She says you'll understand one day, when you're older. She says there's a halo of gold around your face, in your hair, and she can see it and one day you'll see it too.

You never see anything, but when you're five there awakens a voice in your head and he talks like silk over steel. You grow up with his shadow falling over you for all the days of your life.

You are living in that darkness still, though surrounded by a ring of flaming torches. From time to time great jaws snap closed over one and the light recedes, but you are not bothered. Your work will be done before the hounds pull you down.
