there's no real need for threats. he lets his cloak fall from around his shoulders, bunches the wool up in a bare hand so that the edges don't sweep the ground and offers it to her without comment.

her gaze falls on the cloak in his hand, she hesitates in both her actions and words, unsure of what she's supposed to do.

"you can take it and leave. i won't stop you," cameron says sincerely, the lines of his white uniform stark and ghostly in the dimness.

the word almost escapes her lips (why) but she stops herself. she doesn't want to know the answer to that question as much as she thinks she does, she rationalises, as she carefully takes the cloak from his hands. his leather gloves aren't the same as her's, not as strong or as thick. she's more cautious with her fing-talons, the illusion of being human has been broken she reminds herself.
she rests it on her shoulders careful not to tear the fabric - why take so much care for something not belonging to you? she asks herself - but when she grasps the ends of the strings she knows she's supposed to tie together, she almost seethes. talons don't bend the same way as fingers, the joints aren't the same, claws are too sharp, she's never been able to tie knots, always getting someone else to do them for her.
she looks up at cameron, pride stopping her from asking aloud, but logic telling her to ask anyway. she trips over her words, "i... i can't tie this," something she never does, but never has she dealt with confliction of herself before. it's a new experience, and she can't help the uncertainty of all these supposed new experiences filling her life since that faithful day in the plaza. she questions herself, should i get out before it goes to far?
she answers, no, this won't mean anything in the future. (but fate has always been a mysterious and fickle thing, hasn't it?)

he doesn't think about it head-on—why he's handed over his gloves and his cloak, his anonymity, to a monster who looks like a human girl but will never be one. (she'll only approach the line, more human by increments, by integrals, until one day cameron'll realize he can't see the line anymore, that the difference is negligible.)
he thinks it's not kindness but another warped mockery, an imitation, a mathematical limit.
it's in this apparent, distorted sympathy that he takes the cloak strings in both hands, deftly ties a knot, smoothes the fabric down her shoulders and steps back.
"goodbye, etta."
