Smoke and the reek of blood choke him. An unequivocal hot, sticky wetness bathes his skin, a mixture of his own blood and that of a beast's. Metal clatters to the ground, and so does he. Time jumps backwards years, decades. He is young, younger. He kills one monster, then its mother. A sword is raised above his head in triumph. A hero hailed by a cheering crowd. He awakens to those images still fresh in the mind, and no sooner did they fade from memory. From a bed of satin he rises and silken robes are pulled over his shoulders, a glass of wine and a bowl of grapes to start the day. He’s no king, but he’ll sure live like one.
