mountains. deserts. he has traveled miles to find home. and he finds it in a house. it's run down. one of those houses that makes you wonder-- just how hard do the owners try, to maintain it? probably pretty hard, pine thinks, because although it is run down, he sees some nice curtains through the windows. and although the paint is chipping in some places, it's a pretty color. pine admires the house. maybe he's biased- it's his "home," apparently. but to be honest, pine isn't exactly sure whether or not this stone does anything. he just got that feeling that it was special. the house gives him a similar emotion- with some nerves thrown in. and it makes him want to throw up. a 10 year old pine approaches the door, the evening light just barely illuminating his face. his hand rises and he knocks on the door timidly, but with a rare posture-- he wants to make a good impression. theirs has been a regular family. just a simple little family with a simple little home with a simple little life. what ambition there had been in her parents had been poured into the belief that their little girl - strong even at her young age, they'd say, ignoring the fact that she has ears and is yet only eight years old - that their little eleanor could one day kill a monster, a demon, a nightmare with her own two hands and bring fame and glory to their simple little name. she'd grown up, alone. alone amongst neighbors with brothers and sisters, the odd duckling out, always. once, for her sixth birthday, she'd asked her parents could i have a brother? or a sister, it doesn't matter which.she doesn't ask for things anymore, nor does she make wishes on her birthday. there is a knock at their door, and eleanor stands to answer it. her father is at the fireside, reading; her mother, sewing. neither look up from their tasks. the wooden door creaks with age, and she has to tilt her head up a bit to see. "what're you doing outside?" she asks - the words are the first that dart into her head. she cannot feel it, but everyone says that it has been a cold winter, and even without having experienced it eleanor knows that it merely gets colder after nightfall. a blink. two blinks. the boy is still there, on their doorstep. she stands aside. "you can come in if you want, you know." her parents will not notice until he steps into the living room. until then: a choice. PINE IRWIN

pine had lived in the mountains for many years. he was familiar with the feeling of loneliness. it was constant in a place like that. isolated from society. "loneliness," eleanor calls it. he calls it "living." being alive is, within itself, a lonely thing. because no one will look out for your life- you're the only person that can. this is what pine has learned.(there were times where he "stole" children, yes. there were times where he'd bring them back to his cave and he'd ask them if they wanted to play, or stay awhile. but they were gone before he could even finish. he just wanted someone to talk to, that's all, just a moment of relief so he doesn't freeze to death all alone in a cave-- there were times when he'd beg them to stay: just play for a while. he had a nice collection of dolls he built up...) this is how it works. you freeze until you're frozen, you cry until you stop, you laugh until you frown, and you live until you die. and then do it all again. pine's accepted it, he doesn't mope. there's no reason to be sad-- that gives away the power over your own life and feelings. he'd rather be emotionless and free than feel and be trapped. pine offers tamara a grin. it's crooked and awkward and he hasn't figured it out yet. there's still practicing to do, but it's endearing. he feels slightly out of place, but he looks at her and stands tall regardless. "i...uh..." pine mutters quietly- still figuring out his words. he doesn't talk often. "can i?" he asks himself quietly, considering. it takes him a moment to decide if it's acceptable or not. it is someone else's house. he squints, and looks eleanor in the eyes. (oh, pine, now you remember, after seeing another child's eyes open. how you'd find the bodies on the mountainside. yes, sometimes, the children you stole didn't make it home. monster. fox. thief, kidnapper, murderer.) pine feels lightheaded, but manages to get out an answer. "uh...okay." and he steps inside the house; but all he sees is a cave. ELEANOR RAVENSDALE

she'd never found out why her parents hadn't granted her the wish of a sibling. (later, when she is older, and perhaps no wiser, she will understand what her mother had meant by her words "we can't.") she's never figured out if she wants an older or a younger, either. older siblings seem more fun, though. less likely to cry. more likely to help her, instead of a younger that she has to protect, instead. the boy is tall, and eleanor has to tilt her head up. tamara did this too - looking up to him. always looking up to him. he seems awkward, instead, and her eight-year-old mind connects hesitance with shyness.one or the other: they are all the same to her, in the end. she opens the door wider, makes her smile (when had she started smiling at this stranger? she doesn't remember) larger. "i wouldn't have offered if you can't, would i?" he steps in; and eleanor closes the door behind them both with a quiet-loud thud. she doesn't know; it sounds quiet to her ears, but she's lived with this creaky wooden door her entire life. she doesn't notice anymore. "we have a guest," she calls out into the house instead, and takes the stranger by the hand (we're being bold, aren't we, tamara eleanor? let's hope you don't regret it) to drag him inside in the only way the not-quite-children can. her grip is firm. her father and mother do not respond until they are both in the room, warmed by the fire as it is. you've known her before, haven't you?you've killed her before, haven't you?haven't you felt her hand grip yours this way before? haven't you memorized the color of her eyes before, hasn't she betrayed you before?and didn't you do the same?a strong impulse tells him to clean himself up. (he doesn't talk to adults, he doesn't know how-- they're scarier than children. they're different.) he waits for a moment when tamara eleanor isn't looking-- and he licks his hands and runs them through his hair, pulling and tugging at a few knots here and there. he smooths it, wishing to look civilized. and he straightens his collar. although his clothes are somewhat tattered and beat up- pine wants everything in order. he sticks a hand in his pocket and runs his fingers over a stone. smooth and chilled. he takes it out and clenches it in a tight fist. a look at eleanor. and then to the rock. he wants to show her but resists. (he needs this to work, he needs her to like him...) why would she like him if he's different than she is. differences aren't welcome. are they?'you are in a cave and you feel welcome here. something different about this cave though-- the creaking doors make you feel comfortable. the dim light makes you feel warm, and smooth flooring keeps you content. but it's a bear's cave- you're just a fox. this is home is not yours until you can create yourself anew.' his mind tells him to change. he has, he does, he will. "i'm pine." he says to eleanor. it's sudden. as much as a surprise to eleanor as it is to him, because pine has never had a name before. he decided quickly it was pine. but perhaps he always knew he was 'pine,' he had just never said it aloud. "thank you for letting me inside." his eyes are constantly darting across the room. he is not scared, he is not nervous-- but tamara's eleanor's stare is strong and his isn't. he doesn't want to look her in the eye. "i...traveled a lot." he says quickly, trying to draw attention away from his past. there are questions he can't answer with lies. there are plenty that he can't answer with truths either. and some, he can't answer because he simply doesn't know the answer. "why are you here? where do you come from?he doesn't ask anything of eleanor yet. asking questions is like a game of catch. it goes back and forth. teamwork has never been his forte. but tamara is a little different, isn't she?ELEANOR RAVENSDALE (so late im sorry i've been in holiday hell :[ )

she doesn't see the rock. she doesn't see the hesitance, the cleaning up, any differences that he might have. all she sees are the tattered clothes and appearance, not out-of-place in their beat-up neighborhood. maybe you don't want to see. poor eleanor, always seeing the things that you project upon others, never harsh reality until it is too late - or maybe you aren't eleanor?he's been so quiet, she wouldn't have been surprised if he hadn't spoken up at all, after that first request for shelter. the mention of his name is sudden, but the actual name is welcome. pine. she tries it on her tongue, and finds it satisfying. her parents only look up, once, before they shrug and accept. "you're most certainly welcome," mother says. she is a harsh woman, all sharp lines and edges from a hard life. but courtesy costs nothing, is yet valued in their home. appearance is everything. "here, why don't the both of you come by the fire and warm up?"eleanor doesn't feel the cold - doesn't even know what it is, but that is a fact for another time - but thinks that maybe pine does. she does her best to drag him over to the crackling flames. "i'm eleanor," she says in return, because you're supposed to be polite and return things, return a name for a name, right? but maybe it's not eleanor, it's tamara, but that can't be right because she's always been eleanor.

he's silent because he doesn't know what to say at this point. he didn't plan it-- he didn't think he'd have to. for one, pine wasn't sure he'd make it this far. and if he did, he was under the impression that this all would be a little more magical, and they'd be looking for him too, just as he was for them. pine stares at the fire and cautiously takes a step towards-- nope, nope, nope, nope. he steps back. that's too hot for him. he shakes his head as politely as he can at this point, unsure of what to tell eleanor's mother. "i-....i'm not a big fan of fire," he says quietly- in a whisper- to eleanor. he can only trust her at this point, and therefore he has to believe that she will help him communicate. it's his only option. eleanor is her name. good. easy. it rolls off the tongue. unlike tamara. you hate that name, but you love the person. well. it's a complicated emotion. you just consider that feeling love. you do not lie to yourself...only to others.he doesn't move or sit, just stands awkwardly-- it's all he can do, at this point. eleanor is adaptable. it's one of the reasons why she hasn't snapped at her father and his delusions of glory and fame yet, why she hasn't reamed her mother out for being so goddess-damn passive.(when even a child understands these things, it's a measure of how bad the situation is. ...but you've never been a child, have you, eleanor?) "that's alright, you don't have to be!" cheerfulness is a mask, a cover. with pine, she doesn't need it. with her parents, she does. "you can sit down where you are, then -- don't your legs hurt from standing so much?"(awkward is dead. she killed it with her own two hands when she was younger. there is no such thing as awkward in this house, go take it somewhere else.) eleanor beams, and sits cross-legged on the floor herself. it's an old, wooden thing, more warped than anything, but that doesn't matter. it's the thought that counts. tell yourself that, tamara.PINE IRWIN
