 belet is a strange city, contradictions flung askew to pile at the visitors' feets. so much sunlight in the surroundings, but the shadows flit through the heart of the city as well. whether or not the practicing witches know of it is one thing that alexander cares not about; this is not his city, this is not his home. it will be... interesting, anyway, to see what the witches of belet will bring about next. he is dressed as a simple traveler - worn clothes, tan skin from the shara, a single blade that may have seen better days. alexander wouldn't know; it had not been his to begin with. many of the things he has had not been his to begin with, but searchers will find that not one of them will complain. death is funny like that. there is next to no one else on the streets; not in the back alleyways in the night, when shadows throw themselves across the ground and thieves wait around the corners. alexander walks without paying attention to the potential danger. there has been next to no one else on the streets, but it is not that large of a surprise when another person stands in the next alleyway that he turns onto. it had been just a matter of time, really. he does not falter and continues to walk on. tomorrow is yesterday. |  It is not so much an opinion as a fact, the notion that if you value your continued survival you do not talk to strangers in Belet after dark. Sometimes you shouldn't even talk to those you know, their dear and beloved faces pale and narrow in the moonlight, unfamiliar with newly revealed angles. There's no telling who or what anything is, after all, in a city ruled by witches. The light of the Goddess keeps strangeness and shadow in Belet down to a minimum during the day--at least in the public view--but all bets are off at night. Or so the priests chant. So the gossiping wives say as they call to each other from their stoops, beating the day's laundry with weathered sticks. But Thalia has never believed in the Goddess, never seen any proof that her light falls anywhere she can reach. And so for her, the darkness and the day hold equal measures of terror. And so when the man continues walking, she turns on her heel to call after him, though she does not know him. "I wouldn't keep going that way," she says. "The imperial salt witches are in town, recruiting for the army, and they get along badly with the ruling house. There's been two fights already tonight, and a third is about to break out in that direction. You don't want to be anywhere around when they start flinging hexes." ALEXANDER EAST |

he does not expect the stranger to attempt to warn him, so accustomed is he to resigned people and stagnant wills, long suspicious of strangers. still, he does not falter, only slows to a stop to peer over his shoulder. he does not question the validity of her statement - why would she lie about something like this, when as far as he can see, she gains nothing from it? - but rather, her motives. "recruiting again?" it is not a surprise that the imperials are looking for more to join their ranks. his voice contains only weary resignation. salt witches have the uncanny habit of sniffing out monsters in disguise, he's found; he does not wish to have to deceive a mob again, no matter how amusing it had been the first time around. it taxes his strength and the fighting back takes the fun out of the deception. "thanks for the warning. i'm not in interested in joining the military myself."here, he squints, as if attempting to see through what shadows there are in this alley. in reality, he sees just fine - but again, the deception of mortality rears its head. "not interested in serving the glorious empire either, i see?"a statement with a curious inflection to it. humans have always been... interesting. this new pink-haired is nothing different. tomorrow is yesterday. | There's dirt ingrained so deeply into the folds of Thalia's knuckles, under her nails, that it will take months of cold baths in the military to scrub the last of it out. There is a hunger embedded in her bones so deep that she can never outrun it. She is always going to eat each meal like it is her last, like someone is going to take the food from her. But that's in the future. Right now she only has the dirt and the hunger and not even the futile wishing or wanting of a life that's something else. She shrugs in the darkness, a graceless movement. he has lived long enough to see the rise of the current empire. in all of its years it has yet to impress him with its conduct, military or otherwise. it is part of the reason that alexander does not mind deceiving it, now and again. "some might disagree," is the only thing he says. it is odd; she does not seem to carry herself like a civilian, young woman or not. not many in belet would risk wandering the paths alone in the dark, so - a fighter. it would explain the attitude towards the empire as well; not many look up to their governing society after seeing the raw, carnage side of it. still, she had seen fit to warn a stranger of salt witches and possible mobs. humanity will never cease to amaze."if i should not wander the city at dark for fear of salt witches, should you not as well?" it is naught but empty words - alexander is not truly questioning her right. but she had stopped him, when no other on the streets had. perhaps there is something to her that he had not perceived at first glance. She shrugs her shoulders again, more for the sake of moving than anything else. "You don't look like you belong, though," she says, eyeing his traveler's garb. "They'll either be intrigued, or use you as collateral."ALEXANDER EAST |

"well-reasoned. i'm a traveler; still, i wouldn't be too worried, though." he still has tricks up his sleeve that he has not used in this area as of yet - it will be enough. hopefully.a woman who judges herself less than what she is, is something that alexander has encountered before. it is nothing new, nor interesting, in and of itself. still, he stalls. refrains from venturing into the salt witches' radius and causing mayhem. bargaining for material objects. it's not that alexander doesn't understand the need; he does, intimately, even though he has simply forced for necessities when he finds he doesn't have the patience. it's the fact that even the imperial witches, the honored witches with foresight, will stoop to such things to gain unwilling blood that has him grinning. it's not appropriate, but since when has alexander ever cared? "being slow's not a problem." it had never been a problem, to be honest. "you sound like you have a lot of personal experience - not like the people who don't know what they're getting into when they stand to close to a witch."a statement; take it or leave it. the hellhound in him cocks its head and waits. against its nature, maybe, but alexander had always been the curious sort. If she knew he was being dishonest (and she had the feeling he might know as well) what was the matter? Thalia tied her hair up in a sloppy bun to avoid looking at his face. it says a lot about the hellhound man that he doesn't flinch at the mention of canibalism. there are worse things in the world. ( he is one of them.) he grins at her, a wolf's mocking smile, full of jagged edges and dangerous teeth. he gives a mocking bow more suited to court than a dusty traveler. "your wish is my command."finding an area full salt witches is not hard. they intone, they chant, they stare. into the crowd, at the soldiers lined up like toys, looking for that one special child.alexander leans against a wall, hidden behind the crowd. it's only a matter of time before the witches realize what is in their midst. he doesn't look at his pink-haired companion, if she has deigned to follow him plainly in sight or not. it doesn't matter to him. only the prey do, and that is a matter of time.
